Bush Takes On Opponents of Immigration Deal (On Drudge)
NY Times ^ | May 29, 2007 | JIM RUTENBERG

GLYNCO, Ga., May 29 — President Bush today accused opponents of his proposed immigration measure of fear-mongering to defeat it in Congress, and took on his own conservative political base as he did so.

“If you want to scare the American people, what you say is the bill’s an amnesty bill,” Mr. Bush said this afternoon at a training center for border enforcement agents located in this town in Georgia’s southeastern corner. “That’s empty political rhetoric, trying to frighten our citizens.”

The president used some of his toughest language yet as he began an effort to build support for the bill in the Senate. The measure hews closely to his long-sought goal of a new immigration system with three components: tighter seals on the nation’s borders, a guest-worker system for noncitizens who want to work here, and a path to citizenship for some 12 million illegal immigrants already in the country.

The bill, the product of a compromise struck by Republican and Democratic leaders two weeks ago, has encountered stiff resistance from the left and right. Liberal opposition taking aim at the proposal for shifting the system for awarding permanent residence status to give more weight to education and skills and less to family reunification, while conservatives have derided the plan for allowing illegal aliens to legalize their status.

It was the conservative opponents whom Mr. Bush seemed to address most forcefully in his remarks here today — a rare example of the president crossing swords with key members of the political coalition that helped him attain the Oval Office and then keep it four years later: The same conservative radio hosts, writers, bloggers, and legislators who killed an attempt at compromise immigration legislation last year............."

Fred Thompson reminded Bush that immigration was connected to support for the Iraq war.

Bush blew this one, doesn't really understand the problem, does he?

"A lot of Americans are skeptical about immigration reform, primarily because they don't think the government can fix the problems," Bush said.
Nope, not even close. Most Americans are skeptical about immigration reform, primarily because they don't think the government WILL fix the problem.

Change one word, finally the truth, a very big difference.

I read the whole asinine bill. The problem becomes obvious. Look at the 2006 Secure Fence Act for details about the "WILL" part.

"I have been losing sleep and my health has suffered over this immigration bill. I made sent emails and made my calls to my Senators and the White House. I sent emails to all my friends and family telling them to call."

Safe to say, you speak for a great many of us. I can't even look or listen to Bush without feeling ill.

They just lie and lie and lie.

The biggest lie in all of this is "12 million" illegals. I bet there are 12 million in California. I think the true number is upwards of 50 million. A trip over to the IRS would reveal how many shadow accounts there are for SS#'s being used by more than one person.

This is pretty bad, but what does Bush have to lose anymore?

Well, there is Jeb's future political career, but that surely is now dead. I wouldn't vote for anyone from that family ever again.

I hate it when they look you in the eye and lie.

It seems to run in the family.

RIGHT ON!!

I just received an emergency solicitation for funds from the National Republican Congressional Committee, to which I gave a bit more than $200 in 2006. It’s accompanied by a prepaid Fed Ex envelope that can be posted at a Fed Ex drop box or, if I choose, I can call Fed Ex and have them come personally to me in the wilds of far Knox County, TN, and have them pick up my reply. Since the personal pickup will cost the NRCC more money than my putting the envelope in a drop box will, I’m going to put one of your special Jorge Bush pesos in the envelope and call Fed Ex to come pick it up. Unfortunately, this type of retaliation seems to be the only effective way to get our message to the politicians and Bush.

I went through the Tennessee income tax battle a few years ago. The only way we stopped RINO Sundquist from imposing it was by fighting the next thing to a genuine civil war. It looks like we’re going to have to do the same thing to Jorge on this.

Kind regards to you- it’s pretty Gawd-awful when we end up fighting these characters we think we elected to represent us, isn’t it?

It absolutely sucks. What particularly galls me about Bush is we here on Freerepublic did more than anybody else to help him win in 2004. First, we wholeheartedly supported and massively contributed to the Swiftvets. Then, second, and most important, we saved his behind in the Rathergate scandal, not that we ever got much thanks for it.

The really disgusting thing about his response to Rathergate was that he made no effort to have the DOJ prosecute the people, IMHO high ranking members of the Travis County, TX DemonRat organization, who were responsible for falsifying Federal military records. He was, of course, perfectly willing to sit on his hands and let the Travis Co. DemonRats persecute and crucify Tom Delay, Bush’s most effective ally in the House.

I have been saying that for awhile and everybody around me would look at me totally surprised cause I have been the biggest conservative Republican for about 30 yrs now.

No more. These guys all disgust me. I actually changed my party registration recently. I am now an Independent, let em work for my vote. They won’t get it automatically ever again.

Michael Savage has been attacking Bush for being a pussy for 3 years now, and several morons on this site called him a "liberal" or "left-wing mole". Now even Weiner-haters see that Bush is a phony baloney "Ted Kennedy Conservative".

“Fear mongering”? Please George tell me you’re not using the Democratic play book!!!

You need to come here to L.A. to find out it’s now a third-world country. My culture has been taken away from me and I follow the rules, served my country and my boys fight for freedom in Iraq. Then you let those who hate us in through the back door. Thanks George.
