You may want to put that soda can down.

A common preservative found in drinks such as Coca-Cola, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Fanta and Diet Pepsi may cause serious cell damage, according to a report in Britain's The Independent.  Sodium benzoate has the ability to switch off vital parts of a person's DNA, according to research from a British university.  The problem is usually associated with aging and alcohol abuse, but new findings show that drinking soda with the preservative can eventually lead to of the liver and degenerative diseases such as .

Sodium benzoate, which derives from benzoic acid, has been used for years by the carbonated drinks industry to prevent mold from developing in soft drinks. The ingredient has been the subject of concern on cancer, because when mixed with Vitamin C, it turns into a carcinogenic substance called benzene, the Independent reported.  Last year, a Food Standards Agency survey of benzene in drinks found high levels in four brands that were removed from store shelves.    "These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it: they knock it out altogether," said Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology.

I like that stuff! Fake beverages at their finest.

Alas, I just can't any drink diet sodas, and don't drink the sugared drinks anyway. Besides, caffeine is no longer my friend, either. :-( I was never an addict, but if I drink this junk on a regular basis, I get wicked carbohydrate cravings. I've wondered how many people can't lose weight because the more they drink the diet sodas, the more they crave (and give in to) sweets. I suspect a conspiracy involving the diet-food industry and the purveyors of junk food. Notice how the same companies market both! ;-)

I think the Friends cereal, or whatever it’s called, tastes like crap. However, they have a puff and a crunch (like granola) that are pretty good. I’m diabetic and have to watch the carbs. I’d pretty much given up on granola until I found the Kashi brand.

"Life is short. Enjoy it!"

Amen. My goofy SIL was telling me today how much longer I would live and how much healthier I would be if I was 'sugar-free' and only ate my veggies raw with a maximum of 4 oz. of non-red meat, etc., and after listening for a few minutes I told her that I would prefer to be dead than to 'live' like that. This sage advice coming from a pale, totally grey-haired woman with no energy and zero muscle tone, lazing on my couch. I promptly made a pot of coffee and offered her some blackberry crisp with vanilla ice cream.

I don't drink soda too often anymore, now this year found myself not liking coffee very much. Plus, I don't smoke. (do enjoy my cocktails tho..) Ugh! What's happening to me, am I getting OLD?

My fav-o-rite soda chemical is Ester of Wood Resin. It kind of sounds like a name in Robin Hood. “The Sherriff of Nottingham has captured Maid Marian and Ester of Wood Resin.”

"How much vitamin C is in Pepsi?"

It isnt listed as vitamin C - look for citric acid or ascorbic acid... its one of those two.

I rarely drink soda. Maybe have one a month. Not only b/c of this (which I read about over a year ago on a medical site) but also b/c I was advised by my dentist to stop.
According to him, there is hardly anything worse in the world for your teeth than this.
And of course, this doesnt even take into consideration what it does to your kidneys and such.

I have my 4 year old daughter trained to refer to all soda as "bad soda" - and she is allowed "bad soda" on very rare occasions. She usually drinks water, milk w/occasional drinks of tea or juice.

If I get just a nickle as my share of the judgment for every can I’ve consumed I’ll be paving my driveway in 24 karat gold.

P.S. Wonder why MY liver is holding up so well?

And there is a whole array of diseases that are now being tied to damage to this DNA - Parkinson's and quite a lot of neuro-degenerative diseases, but above all the whole process of ageing."

So no one got Parkinson's or even got older before carbonated beverages came on the market? I didn't realize that.
