Wow this is crazy. I was just watching a Wife Swap episode and this really insane family who lived on a farm in Iowa ate only raw food, would not clean their home because of apparent disease in chemical clearners and used a homemade type of toothpaste of honey-butter and clay. Don’t even get me started on their homeschooling....not impressive, but I did not want to tell you everything without proof so I put the overview of this family below. Have fun reading...it is a hoot!!!
Haigwood Family
To Iowa farm-mom Barbara Haigwood (37), her husband, Michael, (39), and their two children, Lee (15) and Aleesha (13), a simple life is the best life. Living on a secluded farm with the nearest town 45 minutes away, the family prides itself on a self-sustained existence where food is grown, harvested and killed on their property with minimal help from the outside world.
The family lives by a raw food philosophy that includes raw beef and chicken, spoiled cheese and un-pasteurized milk. They brush their teeth with a mixture of home made honey-butter and clay and only shower on occasion, as “bacteria is their friend.”
Barbara bucks at the pressure she feels society puts on people to become prepackaged clones and tries to keep most forms of “mainstream” culture out of her household. She “unschools” her kids using farm chores as the classroom - if you call counting eggs a math class.
I saw that episode too, and at the time I thought they were nuts.
I have decided to bite the bullet and to join an organic co op.
I used to think they were the nuts, now I will be one of them.
I know a 20-something with plans to live in the middle of nowhere...in a yurt. Turns out you can buy yurt ‘kits’.
God knows how he’s going to ween himself off pop and pizza.
Well, unpasteurized milk is no biggie. Most dairy farm kids I know drink it that way and they’re some of the healthiest kids I’ve ever met. No way drinking raw milk is equivalent to eating raw meat.
Sheesh, breastfed babies drink raw milk. *gasp* Better not let the FDA figger that one out.
