Theodore Roosevelt on Immigration - Suggested reading for his fan McCain (vanity)
Various ^ | 1900's | Theodore Roosevelt

Posted on 05/27/2007 7:20:16 AM PDT by SE Mom

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all.

This is just as true of the man who puts “native” before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance.

But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else.

The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English- Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian- Americans, or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality than with the other citizens of the American Republic.

The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American. (Addressing the Knights of Columbus in New York City )

IMMIGRANTS—ASSIMILATION OF. Where immigrants, or the sons of immigrants, do not heartily and in good faith throw in their lot with us, but cling to the speech, the customs, the ways of life, and the habits of thought of the Old World which they have left, they thereby harm both themselves and us. If they remain alien elements, unassimilated, and with interests separate from ours, they are mere obstructions to the current of our national life, and, moreover, can get no good from it themselves. In fact, though we ourselves also suffer from their perversity, it is they who really suffer most.

It is an immense benefit to the European immigrant to change him into an American citizen. To bear the name of American is to bear the most honorable of titles; and whoever does not so believe has no business to bear the name at all, and, if he comes from Europe, the sooner he goes back there the better. Besides, the man who does not become Americanized nevertheless fails to remain a European, and becomes nothing at all.

The immigrant cannot possibly remain what he was, or continue to be a member of the Old World society. If he tries to retain his old language, in a few generations it becomes a barbarous jargon; if he tries to retain his old customs and ways of life, in a few generations he becomes an uncouth boor. He has cut himself off from the Old World, and cannot retain his connection with it; and if he wishes ever to amount to anything he must throw himself heart and soul, and without reservation, into the new life to which he has come. (Forum, April 1894.)

I have two reasons for posting some of Theodore Roosevelt's beliefs and ideas about immigration to America.

First- it seemed remarkable to me while researching this- that so many of us earnestly believe today what he did back then- illustrating the timelessness of clear principles. If you've not read TR much on this subject- be prepared to pour another cup of coffee..

Second- John McCain is a great TR fan- or has always said so. Perhaps he (and his colleagues) might take the time to read, study and ponder on the insightful words of this American who saw with great clarity, the exact problems we face today...

I found these by looking all over the internet- from http://www.theodoreroosevelt.org/TR%20Web%20Book/TR_CD_to_HTML279.html

to - http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/troosevelt.asp

One more thought from TR seems quite apt in light of the present fight over this in Washington, D.C. and across the country:

"..If we consciously or carelessly preach ideals which cannot be realized and which we do not intend to have realized, then so far from accomplishing a worthy purpose we actually tend to weaken the morality we ostensibly preach. . . . "

Harm is always done by preaching an ideal which the preacher and the hearer know cannot be followed, which they know it is not intended to have followed; for then the hearer confounds all ideals with the false ideal to which he is listening; and because he finds that he is not expected to live up to the doctrine to which he has listened he concludes that it is needless to live up to any doctrine at all.

McCain is not worthy to pick the dirt from underneath T.R. toenails.

Here is the REAL mccain, busy selling out the entire nation...

Makes me want to require TWO things from the Republicans, toss out the illegals/build the wall coast to coast AND TAKE AWAY THE "R" FROM mccaine!

McCain is a disappointment, no doubt. But he’s always said he’s from the party of Teddy Roosevelt. I find nothing in reading TR that even vaguely resembles McCain on immigration.

What did TR say about freedom of speech vis-a-vis public elections? McCain clearly thinks that political speech should be restricted hence his CFR bill.

The amnesties of 1965 and 1986 are perfect examples of what he is talking about. The federal government has no intentions of inforcing immigration laws for fear of offending illegal aliens and the open border lobby.

This is slightly off-topic, but have you seen the movie “Rough Riders”? Great stuff. Directed by John Milius. Tom Berenger played TR.

“...When compared with the suppression of anarchy every other question sinks into insignificance. The anarchist is the enemy of humanity, the enemy of all mankind, and his is a deeper degree of criminality than any other. No immigrant is allowed to come to our shores if he is an anarchist; and no paper published here or abroad should be permitted circulation in this country if it propagates anarchist opinions.” Theodore Roosevelt, 1908

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or anyone else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else.”
— Theodore Roosevelt speaking against Wilson’s crackdown on dissent after the U.S. entered WWI.

Theodore Roosevelt, U.S. President. Speech, Washington, DC, April 14, 1906
“Men with the muckrake are often indispensable to the well-being of society, but only if they know when to stop raking the muck…An epidemic in indiscriminate assault upon character does not good, but very great harm…There should be relentless exposure of and attack upon every evil practice, whether in politics, in business, or in social life. I hail as a benefactor every writer or speaker, every man who, on the platform, or in book, magazine or newspaper, with merciless severity makes such attack, provided always that he in his turn remembers that the attack is of use only if it is absolutely truthful.”

TR was an intriguing blend- but always articulated his beliefs strongly, no doubt for misunderstanding him:)

What a cacophony on noise and vision. Truly offensive to the mind's eye.

I did find this rather amusing:

Have not seen it for a year now. Still recovering from 60 days on the border managing the Texas Minuteman combined Laredo (September) and El Paso (October) Border Watch operations. Still sleeping on a buddies floor in Dallas.

On the bright side I have been working a good job since late December as a contractor and was hired direct full time just two weeks ago. Moving into my own place next weekend.

Kinda give one a whole new perspective on how hard it is on the guys coming back from (currently) Iraq. I was non-stop 7 days a week operational for two straight months and it kicked my azz as well as leaving me "homeless." Of course I am not 20 years old any more either...

I’ll bet McCain is completely unaware of Roosevelt’s comments about immigration. And I don’t mean that as a defense of McCain.
