Read Harriet Beecher Stowe and then get back to me on this whole “slavery” argument, Nathan.

How does the peeked white hood feel? Kind of restricting your mental energy?  It sure seems like it as this is not up to your usual post.

Don’t insult anyone with this worthless argument. You want cheap labor that business can exploit at below the going wage. I reject your argument as offensive.

And as to "you guys moving so far right" I'd say you have a bit of self examination to go through, Mr. Jefferson Davis.   The president of the CSA had much more sophisticated arguments for exploiting other human beings than you seem to be able to muster, but even he felt that the institution was doomed.  So is this arrangement.

Now I may have been raised in NY but I had an uncle (who died young) named "Jefferson Davis," my father was born and raised in Philadelphia, Mississippi and my grandfather, my namesake, was sheriff of Neshoba County in the depression, though he had one hard and fast rule, no f'n Klan.  So don't try to preach to me on this issue.  I've paid attention to it my whole life and it offends me when people forget history or try to use specious arguments to cover truly foul positions.

I want immigrants to come here, be they poor illiterate shlubs or nuclear scientists, but I want it done fairly (to all, not just Mexicans) and I want it to be controlled so that folks like the Fort Dix Six don’t sneak in through the loopholes being maintained so that cheap gardeners are available to John Kerry. I reject utterly a “businessman's” claim that he needs “cheap” (read exploitable) labor. That person is a fool, not an entrepreneur. There is a better way and a true entrepreneur will find it and the exploiters will fall by the wayside, as they should.

It did help, at least a little, to bring about this fruitful discussion did it not? Some days it is better to be lucky then good. I had been feeling pretty ill about this whole mess prior to today’s thread.

I am not really hopeful yet about how it will turn out but at least we are reasoning and talking again instead of just screaming at each other. That gives me reason for hope.

We have enough enemies without turning on ourselves. It has been a great thread.

It helped and I think it was extremely valuable.

Are the supportive Republican legislators naive or “in” on the scam? And, if they’re in on it, why?

They think they can get elected by appealing to business interests who want it plus immigrant groups. A Republican doesn't have to run as a conservative. (Think of Nelson Rockefeller.) Note there are many businessmen who want national health insurance so as to relieve them of the expense of insuring their employees. I can conceive of quite a few Republicans who would support national health insurance because they thought it would enhance US competitiveness.

Unsecure borders in a time of clear danger.

%%%%

Late getting back to you, I have no quarrel with anything you wrote. The only hope that I see (and pray for) is for our congress to feel enough pressure, not just this summer but forever, that they will enforce border security above all else. I heard recently some politician whining because President Bush has asked for a large sum of money to build detention centers. I say Right On, Mr President.

Why is this not major news? Because the DBM do not want us to know anything that our govt is doing that is positive.

It’s coming back to me now. She was complaining because the eeevil Halliburton won the contract to build these detention centers, according to her.

Sooooooo...I dare say that the national security part, though very clumsily handled by Michael Chertoff (who I do NOT like, btw)...is having some success.

^^^^^^

Ditto!!! in spades! He is even the reason that Brownie had to take the heat for Katrina. He may be a good lawyer, but a terrible administrator, and even worse visionary, and totally horrible communicator.

Those 42 hostages would still be hanging from the ceiling ... or worse

^^^^^

I heard a few minutes of a replay of Bob Shieffer’s show on cspan radio today. He was talking to a female correspondent in Iraq, and they were discussing these rescued victims. She actually said “the so-called enemy” referring to the people who did this.

These people are deranged.

Seems to me the basic problem the Right has is it doesn’t recognize the fundamental irrationality of the Political Left.

*******

So true. Conservatives use reason, and lefties use emotions, and guess what = emotions cannot be reasoned with. I wish our elected reps could understand this fundamental difference. Lying and cheating are not wrong when a dem does it because his motives are ‘good.’ They can accuse Republicans of unlawful or unethical behavior, because we live by rules where some actions are considered to be wrong or illegal. Dems do not live by those rules, hence it is extremely hard to attack them.

Case in point = Every single action taken by Chuckie Shumer is nasty and is totally ignored by Republicans and by the DBM. He is using the Senate to engineer defeat of Republican Senators in 2008, when we have 20 seats to defend. The Dems only have 13 in this cycle.

If our Republicans do not start getting into the heads of the Dems and fighting back, we are heading for disaster!

As much as I'd like to think that building a wall or detention centers will solve the problem, they can only treat the symptom.

The problem is that no border can be controlled when so many people want to cross it illegally. (I suppose the Berlin Wall would be a contradiction to that, but the enforcement practices would be unacceptable). So how to solve the problem? Make the employers who hire these people pay for their cheating the system.

For several years, employers in this country have been required to complete I-9 for new employees. If the employer has reason to think that somebody is actually going to check on compliance, the employer will follow the law more closely. If those same employers think that they can get away with wink, wink, nod, nod, they will ignore the law. And our entire society pays the price of this cheating.

If you want to reduce speeding along a stretch of road, post a squad with a fresh book of blank citations. If you want to reduce rolling stops at stop signs, put a squad at the corner with a fresh book of blank citations. If ... you get the idea. It's simple and effective.

Everybody wants to make this a very complicated situation, but it's really not. If our government wanted to solve this, it could be handled with an increase in the staffing for the agency that checks compliance with I-9. If the people want to solve this, pressure the government to force compliance.

Then, when the employers stop hiring illegals and the flow of inbound illegals drops to a manageable level, then we can expect to adequately secure our borders.

I totally agree with you. However, employers are not the only culprit. Our wink-wink congress has been complicit, by not instituting a serious method by which workers could be checked for legality. I believe that it is well within their capablility to organize a method. That they haven’t done so has been purposeful, IMO.

Alas, (and alas) nobody will read my post.

I couldn’t get here until tonite.

My niece bought a larger house without selling her old, small house. She is (stupidly) thinking of renting it. Were Pukin Dog still here, he would agree with the stupid part.

Anyway, her last renter was a hellish nightmare, couldn’t get rent, couldn’t get her out, not saying it was because she was an immigrant, just sayin’

Now she tells me she’s going to rent through a government program that provides housing to poor people and pays the property owner directly. The monthly rent will come directly from the government. It’s a small house, but the rent isn’t exactly peanuts.

So, I’m like... where’s my rent money??? I’m poor too. (well, not really but ...)

I’ll bet a dollar that the government subsidized renters are able bodied people capable of earning rent money.

I’ll bet another dollar that a 52” TV gets moved into the house when they do.

Am I just being a heartless right wing nut? I’ll let you know when the moving van comes.

Congress must have passed some law regarding this, or the I-9 would not exist. The Executive Branch is responsible for enforcing laws. That focuses the problem on one guy, who routinely sits at a desk that used to have a sign, “The buck stops here.” That, of course, does not excuse Congress from avoiding blame.

You are correct altura and the same situation exists in Britain to.

I know a family who live on welfare yet they have HD TV new Sony play-station etc etc yet the guy has not done a days work - well officially for years. They have 7 children basically so the local authority will grant them the largest council house and low rent and rates. I doubt they pay much sewage/water charges either and probably get assistance towards electric and gas plus loads of child benefit etc. What makes it even worse is that virtually all the children are special needs and have health issues. Doctors have found that the parents have incompatible genes one would have thought after the first couple of children had problems they would not have had any more but no it is more financially beneficial to have more regardless of what life they may have.

Do I sound cynical?
