I think that the answer may be found in Michael Barone’s Hard America, Soft America.

I have another book to finish before I order that on (or borrow it from the library).

The problem with this bill, in my view, is it is a typical unworkable DC boondoggle. DC took a look at the problem and said "ah HA, the solution is MORE law, MORE rules, MORE Bureaucrats. I guess as an old conservative, I got to ask, "How do MORE laws, more spending, more bureaucrats going to do anything to stop people who are all ready breaking the existing law?"

The new laws are just a smokescreen to fool the people. Each side just put in there some cover for their actions. The fix is in among the political elites. If this legislation passes, there are no more illegals--problem solved with a stroke of a pen. They think it then becomes a non-issue in 2008. I think the Reps underestimated the reaction of the base. This is a very divisive issue in the GOP and could result in it splitting apart. The immigration problem is not going away no matter how may laws are passed. It is going to get much worse.

I would say that none of us want to target any faith.  However, when a religion, as a basic article of their beliefs, says that they must either convert, enslave or murder all people not of their faith, then I would say that they have targeted us, and everyone else, not the other way around.

I can live with peaceful people who follow many forms of religion, including Islam.  I married one, she's a Baha'i, which is an offshoot of Islam.  However, all "loyal" Muslims consider her a heretic and believe that it is their duty to kill her as apostate.  That sorta makes it personal for me and as such I've spent more than my share of time studying the relevant information, both the Koran, the Surahs and lots of the material being pushed by the Wahabbis and Khomeni's Shiites.

The Dems had willing accomplices with the RINOs. The WH wants comprehensive immigration reform and will sign anything put in front of it. We had some leverage in 2006, we have none now.

Gotcha thanks. The link was very revealing. One thing that really caught my attention is the assertion made in the piece that as many as 4,000,000 illegals may have crossed the border in 2002. That is a huge number for a single year.

I agree with your summary that to pass the legislation would be a mistake for so many reasons.

This is a difficult topic to even broach since anyone who approaches the topic seriously is often branded as a racist or worse.

Yet truth is many of us just want to see a fair and just approach applied to world immigration into the U.S. not only those coming through the Mexican border.

Maybe you have seen this web-site but it should be viewed by every American (including members of Congress). If one does not wake-up and smell the evils of terrorism after viewing perhaps they are dead already.

Nonetheless, as described by its proponents the bill has so many stipulations, requirements and waiting periods imposed on the now-illegals that very, very few of them will ever qualify for eventual citizenship, which on its face is a pretty good deal.

This begs the question: Will they strip-out the aforementioned stipulations, requirements and waiting periods before the bill is signed or do we have to wait until Hillary is President?

If this bill passes, you can bet that there will be a stampede coming here this year, whether by the Southern border or legal visa. The numbers will be huge and so will the fraudulent documents to prove that they were here before January 2007. If 500,000 illegals get in annually, about 250,000 will have already entered by the time the bill is passed. People start applying for their Z Visas six months after the bill is signed and they have a year to apply to convert their probationary visa. The Secretary of Homeland Security can add another year on to that, which means 2 and 1/2 years can elapse before the window closes. And our border will still not be secured.

Nonetheless, as described by its proponents the bill has so many stipulations, requirements and waiting periods imposed on the now-illegals that very, very few of them will ever qualify for eventual citizenship, which on its face is a pretty good deal.

Citizenship is not the reason they came here. Legalizing their status gives them many of the benefits of citizenship. They will be given SS numbers and be entitled to SS and Medicare. Their children born here will be citizens. The Dream Act is part of the Senate bill so all of their children will be entitled to in-state tuition etc.

And all of these complicated procedures to attain citizenship can be changed by subsequent Congresses. The Dems will do just that, espeically if they take the WH in 2008. Once the 12 to 20 millions are granted legalized status, it really is game over.

This begs the question: Will they strip-out the aforementioned stipulations, requirements and waiting periods before the bill is signed or do we have to wait until Hillary is President?

They will keep them in there with a wink and a nod to La Raza and the unions. The gullible Reps who support this bill will be touting the fact that this is not amnesty. Both the Dems and the Reps know that the American people don't support the "A-word," which is why this bill goes through so many contortions. Once signed, work will begin immediately to change it bit by bit. And the American public will be none the wiser.
