Venezuelans march against closure of TV station

CARACAS (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Venezuelan protesters marched on Saturday to the Caracas headquarters of an anti-government television station, which is being forced off the air after President Hugo Chavez's administration refused to renew its broadcasting license.

Waving flags with the logo of RCTV, demonstrators packed the streets of the capital where news anchors and soap opera stars slammed the imminent closure of the opposition channel.

"What is happening here is simply the silencing of a television station," shouted soap opera actress Gledys Ibarra.

The government is not renewing RCTV's license after 53 years on the air because of accusations that the broadcaster participated in a bungled 2002 coup against Chavez, incited violent demonstrations and aired immoral programming.

Now that is an odd banner to march under when you are complaining about government censorship. Did the chavistas get there beforehand to set it up?

Bahb, got a pic of Carter hugging an astonished Brezhnev? I’ve looked all over and can’t find one.

The man is a tyrant.

He has sent what ammount to death squads around to take land away from citizens. Those that resist are killed.

He has rulled by decree - as did hitler

He is now forcing adults to take lessons in ‘socialism’

He has broken the constitution he once described as the ‘best in the world’ by politicizing the military, not to mention his renaming of the country to incoporate political ideology.

And now he is shutting down a tv station he falsely claimed was supporting a coup. (of course chavez himself attempted a coup to overthrow a democratically elected leader).

Not ONE SINGLE PERSON has been arrested in charge in connection with those accusations.

I’m sure that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Suffice to say this tyrant is not to be trusted and this is a complete travesty for democracy and freedom of the press.

Yet so many of the left are in love with this egg head.

Hopefully the Venezuelans can find it within themselves to stand over Chavez’ dead body.

"The sooner that Chavez is gone"

I'm betting he'll be gone before Bush is...

That's a bet I would take.

No way is that little dog Chavez gone by Jan 20, 2009

The Bush administration knows that festering little worm Chavez is going to collapse sooner or later.

The later the better for Bush, than to have 100,000's of Venezuelans heading for our border via Mexico.

So they do nothing

Carter is proof that being the President of the United States is not an indication of competency.

Telemundo is covering this matter. The Chavez side wears red t-shirts and the opposition wears blue if my recollection is correct. It was in Spanish but I could tell the blue t-shirts were ticked off.
