WASHINGTON: Having won his fight with congressional Democrats on an Iraq war spending bill, President George W. Bush is now waging an equally aggressive battle with Republican senators as he tries to persuade them to support an immigration bill that he hopes will be a signature domestic achievement.
As the Senate debated the immigration measure, Bush spent the past week lobbying behind the scenes to build support for it. A dozen Republican senators, including some of the staunchest opponents of the bill, were summoned to Oval Office meetings to hear the president deliver an impassioned appeal for the legislation.
In return, participants said, they gave Bush an earful about complaints from their constituents.
"He may have this legacy thing in mind - he may think that it's Nixon going to China, that only he can get this done," said Senator Jeff Sessions, Republican of Alabama. Describing the meeting as positive, Sessions said Bush "took it well" when he told the president pointedly that he did not intend to vote for the measure.
"I think he's made a big mistake," Sessions added. "I think he put himself in a position of weakness by making this something that he desperately wants."

“Bush is becoming the Jim Jones of politics.”
Hopefully, not many GOP senators are crazy enough to drink the amnesty Kool-Aid that will result in political suicide.
Go here if you really want to have the hell scared out of you!

Why does Limbaugh keep calling this a “democrat” bill? Bush and many pubs are all for this.
This thing will get killed in the house, Our senators are in the process of compromising us right down the tubes as we speak.
Okay, KBH is breaking with Bush on this bill, then why is she proposing to cut the fence?
That attitude is what WILL GUARANTEE that this bill gets passed.
When you send out one email, no one listens. When you call, write, or fax every member of the House and Senate a dozen times... when you do the same to your local representatives and the party chairs for your state... when you rally whomever you can to do the EXACT SAME THING... that is when they listen.
I want to be perfectly clear on one point; THIS ISSUE GOES WAY BEYOND BEING A REPUBLICAN OR NOT. It has everything to do with the future of our country, and that makes it the business of every American to try and defeat it.
If you want to stop calling yourself a Republican, that is fine. I plan on spending a lot of time working to defeat ANY republican that supports this bill, but we have to wait until the primaries to do that.
However, unless you want to stop calling yourself an American, it is time to quit your bitching or get in the game. This time, we will absolutely reap what we sow.
She was getting ready to come out for it until her phone lines lit up and her email got swamped. She then changed her tune. For the first time I got an email from her calling me BY NAME.We have to keep the pressure on or they’ll do a COMPROMISE and tell us how great a job they did.
because of the net benefit to democrat causes - more welfare recipients, gov't programs, etc will translate to more people voting themselves more goodies and welfare. illegal immigrants will be the next big 'victim group' for liberals to pander to.
Well said.
The leftists and RINOS want America to be a two-class system. On the one hand the super-wealthy ruling elite. On the other hand, poorly-educated peasants who will vote for almost anyone and tolerate almost anything. Members of the elite can trade places running the show. The Republicrats and Demopublicans can each promise better bread and circuses. For this to work there is no room for an educated middle class.
“He thinks were stupid, and doesnt care what WE the people who pay taxes want. “
That’s the distinct impression I got from the press conference.
And, it may seem unfeeling, but his whining about the horrors of smuggling people into the country only made me question whether the guy thinks he’s in office to protect the people of Mexico, or protect the people of the U.S..
Just 26% Favor Senate Immigration Plan
Then you need to understand that your freedom only exists because of the REAL "rule of law" that exists in the US. If the illegal immigrant amnesty passes, that rule of law will be irreversibly damaged.
Add to that the fact that the legalization (and subsequent acquisition of voting rights by a cultural subgroup that is, at core, socialist), and you will see the demise of the conservative position, and the enthronement of the left wing Democrats for the foreseeable future (and probably forever).
IOW, you can kiss "freedom" goodbye.
The consequences of granting these people citizenship will cause irreparable damage to this country. Giving illegal aliens a path to citizenship would mean giving them the key to changing the political balance in America. Giving illegal aliens a path to citizenship would mean giving them a path to leadership in American government.
There is no way that anyone who came to America illegally should be granted the right to vote or to run for and/or hold public office.
My take on this is that some dude with popularity ratings as low as Bush’s has no leverage to “woo” anyone.
Amen.
Good points
I believe there is a tendency here to over-emphasize the "cheap labor" aspect of immigration and overlook the "willing consumer" aspect of it.
Big Horn if you dont see that this amnesty will kill this country down the road you sir are sadly misinformed.Bush is selling this country right down the river. Its treasonous in my estimation.
