Well written and thanks for posting. I disagree on only one part of it and that is that the Nato expansion did not improve relations with Russia. The behavior you see from Putin’s Russia in bullying the EU and former Soviet satellite stats now part of the EU with the energy card should come as no surprise. Democracy did indeed push eastward but that is not what the writer presents.

Well written and insightful, as has been stated above. And also a cause for absolute RAGE at how our politicians behave. This line, in particular, got me:

In that idealized "new" United States, political uncertainty, demanding constituents, difficult elections, and accountability in general would "go away" after tinkering with the People, who have given lawmakers their privileges but who, like a Sword of Damocles, can also "unfairly" take them away. Hispanics would acquiesce and assist in the "natural progress" of these legislators to remain in power and increase the scope of that power. In this sense, Republicans and Democrats were similar.

Earth to Politicians: WE AIN'T INTERESTED IN A "NEW" UNITED STATES!!!! The old one was and is just fine, thank you. In fact, my only response to that is: Rope. Tree. Politician. Some assembly required. Yes, of course, we'll do the right thing and pressure them first, and vote against them second. But what do we do when all of that fails, when the politicos get what they want in the paragraph above?

AND, fill our schools with poorly prepared kids who were 'medicated' thru medicaid and the 'free' emergency rooms, while eating foods purchased with food stamps?

You forgout the part about "while they and their 100 or so relatives live off of social security that the American taxpayer who was forced to fund it for years gets nothing because it will all be gone."

Both Dems and Reps surely know these phrases but smaelessly ignore them:

The consent of the governed.

“With liberty and justice for all.” Justice?

“We the people of the United States.” Who cares what you peasants think?

I called and got through to Hutchinson and Cornyn. Read the staff members a well-reasoned, nicely toned RIOT ACT. They understood in very clear terms that neither of their bosses would get mine or my immigrant wife’s votes the next time around if they voted for this crap. Rewarding law-breaking, tax evasion, etc. is unacceptable. The 24-hour “shall issue” so-called “temporary” Z visas (actually renewable for life - gee, that’s **real** temporary) will destroy what little ability we have to stop terrorists from entering and getting valid IDs. Oh, and spitting in the face of every person that has legally immigrated and legally paid their taxes is outrageous!! Finally, I let them know that the rush job on pushing this thing through without the informed consent of the American People is beyond the Pale.

Keep trying, folks. Don’t give up on this thing - the more sunlight is shown on this bill, the more the cockroaches will scurry away.

Some on that get this... ... I'm be saying this forever..Why the elites on our side support this...The average American citizen is to dam "uppity" for the elite's.. they want peon that know there place... it not race.. it class... upper class need a peon lower class that know it... they envy the third world power structure... the enemy is the middle class-- IE the freeman that nether rules/owns others or is ruled/owned by others

While Democratic legislators we spoke with welcomed the Latino vote, they seemed more interested in those immigrants and their offspring as a tool to increase the role of the government in society and the economy. Several of them tended to see Latin American immigrants and even Latino constituents as both more dependent on and accepting of active government programs and the political class guaranteeing those programs, a point they emphasized more than the voting per se. Moreover, they saw Latinos as more loyal and "dependable" in supporting a patron-client system and in building reliable patronage networks to circumvent the exigencies of political life as devised by the Founding Fathers and expected daily by the average American. Republican lawmakers we spoke with knew that naturalized Latin American immigrants and their offspring vote mostly for the Democratic Party, but still most of them (all except five) were unambiguously in favor of amnesty and of continued mass immigration (at least from Mexico). This seemed paradoxical, and explaining their motivations was more challenging. However, while acknowledging that they may not now receive their votes, they believed that these immigrants are more malleable than the existing American: That with enough care, convincing, and "teaching," they could be converted, be grateful, and become dependent on them. Republicans seemed to idealize the patron-client relation with Hispanics as much as their Democratic competitors did. Curiously, three out of the five lawmakers that declared their opposition to amnesty and increased immigration (all Republicans), were from border states.

Bottom line this will guarentee bigger government spending and a bigger voting base for it on the Democrates side. The GOP will benifit only through big business in the form of cheap labor. Some thing for everyone accept the American people! I for one have had enough! These are our representatives we elected and they are pandering to everyone and forgetting who put them there.This will be a very interesting presidential election come 2008 and beyond BEFOREWARNED OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS, YOU CROSSED THE LINE WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! REMEMBER? “WE THE PEOPLE” YOU WILL, WHEN YOUR TURN IS UP AND YOU ARE LOOKING OUR WAY FOR SUPPORT! hope you have a second career in mind!
