FW students protest TAKS decision (not allowed to graduate for failing standardized test)

FORT WORTH — Students who had been planning to walk across the stage at graduation ceremonies this weekend were instead walking a picket line Thursday morning.

The Trimble Tech High School seniors marched in front of Fort Worth Independent School District headquarters to protest Wednesday's decision by trustees to bar students who failed the TAKS test from commencement exercises.

About a dozen young people, carrying signs and chanting, began picketing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. They represent the 613 Fort Worth seniors who did not pass the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam

1. The serious side: These idiots and other idiots like them have actually gotten the state house to vote to drop the test because too many Texas students are not passing.

2. Did you notice the sign? What a poster child for standardized testing (pun intended)

>>LEFTARDS in the making.<<

Standardized tests are so easy and the bar is set so low that the only sane response is to look at why and how the kids could fail... but why bother when you can just blame the test?

You can’t graduate in AZ, or at least in Yuma, without passing the AIMS test, either (which I am gathering is the same type of test).

Thing is, you have Sophomore, Junior and Senior year to meet or exceed on it. If you exceed all three sections, I believe you get a huge break on in-state college prices.

I’m really not a fan of the idea of standardized testing being required for graduation, but I know that they bend over backwards to accomodate these kids and try to help them pass the thing.

Same thing here in Florida. The students and their parents get all in a huff. Every year there are several thousand students that fail the test and must take mandatory summer school to get their diploma. However there are several hundred thousand who do pass the test. So, the question that always comes up, is it the schools fault or the students fault? The last court challenge I know of ended badly for the student and their parents.

I don't know who owns the TV station but I just copied the pic onto my photobucket account in case they took it down. My guess "not photoshopped"

So, a senior, who graduated at the top of her class, failed the test?

How is that possible?

Crystal Martinez complained that while she finished at the top of her class with a 3.5 grade point average, she is now blocked from graduation by failing the TAKS test.

"We know we're not going to get our diplomas, but we just want to walk across the stage," Martinez said. "That's all we ask for right now."

School officials said non-graduating seniors will have a chance to take the TAKS test again in July. If they pass, they can participate in a separate commencement exercise in August.

Crystal has a great future as a charmer in Advertising or PR if she can get a 3.5 GPA, yet flunk the bonehead test.

>>Those kids shouldn’t be barred from graduation. They should be put to sleep so they don’t pollute the gene pool. The standardized tests in TX are so unbelievably easy an 8th grader can pass them. If they can’t get a 70% passing grade on such remedial test problems then they probably have trouble remembering how to breath too.

Crack mom with the mispelled sign only reinforces my point.<<

I hope that is a mother instead of a student. I
