REGION UPDATE

Captured L.A. Gator Thought To Be Reggie

May 25, 2007

LOS ANGELES – A 6½-foot alligator believed to be the elusive Reggie that lurked in a park lake for two years was captured yesterday in a wrestling match with a reptile expert and rangers, and was rushed to a zoo with TV news helicopters trailing its journey across the nation's second-largest city.

The wily non-native reptile became a celebrity as it left a series of would-be gator wranglers empty-handed and then managed to disappear for 18 months until it was spotted again late last month.

Yesterday, the alligator came out of Harbor Regional Park's Lake Machado and was spotted on land about 3:30 p.m., around the time city and park officials and wildlife experts were meeting nearby to find a way to capture the reptile. Park officials put a fence around the animal and Los Angeles Zoo reptile expert Ian Recchio put a hook around its neck. As Reggie thrashed about, rangers held it and put duct tape around its mouth.

Reggie was an illegal pet allegedly tossed into the 50-acre lake by a former policeman when it got too big.

"Reggie was an illegal pet allegedly tossed into the 50-acre lake by a former policeman when it got too big."

Maybe this explains why he is a former policeman...

Send it to Hillary.....they should get along just fine. No morals, doesn’t care who he takes down to get his way and believes everyone to support him.

I must be getting too cynical. When I saw the helicopters I assumed it was just another gang-related shooting.

Yep, this sounds like Reggie. He was a fun novelty, but it is time for him to go.

We need to send several thousand gators from Florida to another place and this story seems to make LA the best place to send them.

I live in So-Cal.

Please send THEM!

Maybe the gators can clear out MacArthur Park of all of the illegal aliens!

Seconding you sending them here! So many of our parks are filled all weekend long by families speaking not one word of English and not bothering to clean up after themselves. The kids on the play structures are unsupervised and know no manners. Maybe the families will pay more attention if gators are lurking about.
