STAMFORD, Conn. In his second major outing as a presidential candidate in waiting, Fred Thompson spoke last night to the Connecticut Republican Party for its annual Prescott Bush awards dinner...
"We are now living in a nation that is beset by people who are suicidal maniacs," Mr. Thompson said, laying into the recent proposed compromise, engineered by Senator McCain, that would provide legal status to millions of currently illegal immigrants while ostensibly strengthening border enforcement. "We're sitting here now with essentially open borders."
"They don't get it that putting it on a piece of paper anymore, even passing it into law, does not convince the American people that they will do what they say they're going to do," Mr. Thompson thundered.
And... he had much harsher words for the Democrats on the war in Iraq. "We look at our friends on the Democratic side who have clearly decided not what is best for their country, but what is best for the Democratic Party, and how they might get additional votes in future elections," he said.
"Our choice is where we will fight," Mr. Thompson said, echoing President Bush's familiar line about fighting the terrorists there, so as not to have to fight them here. All the Democrats want to debate, he said, is "the date of our surrender."
Agree or disagree, these were the words of a man ready for a fight. If folks weren't ready to believe it after Orange County, they should be after Stamford.
Talking to a likely Thompson staffer ahead of the speech, I said I hoped he'd get in the race and shake things up. The staffer said, coyly, "I think you'll get your wish." I didn't push for a date and time. But this guy's ready to go for it.

I had one of my coworkers use that phrase on me recently, my response was, "what happens if you work smarter AND harder?".
My family were all avid tennis players. We even have our own clay court in our yard. When my mom was teaching me as a youth how to play I once commented on a match we were watching where one of the players was scrambling and running all over the court, huffing and puffing and working up a sweat, while his opponent seemed to just be 'strolling" around at the baseline and 'nonchalantly" returning his fierce volleys.
When I made the comment that the player who was storming all over the court must be the better player because he 'really knew how to hustle', my mom explained how wrong I was.
She said "In tennis, if a player looks like he's working really hard, it really means he isn't very good.
The same principle is true in politics, as Ronald Reagan demonstrated. Think about it.

Then you don’t know enough.
None, right now. But they seem to lean for Romney. I don't think Romney will make it, because they will bring up the Mormon/black issue which may be tough to combat if the media spins it with all the resources they have at their disposal.
The reason I am upset about this is I see people falling into the same trap as 2000...Fall in love with a guy, don't question anything about him, and go after anyone who does. It happened with Bush, and look what has happened. These guys are human beings like us, with faults, and are not Jesus Christ incarnate. They have to EARN our vote, and I am going to make sure we make them work for it!!!
jellybean; Petronski; STARWISE---As for the rest of you, no need for apologies, I know you guys are just plain sorry.
No, you mind-blowing genius. Look at post 38. Then apologize.
smellybean sez: You (the always correct Captain Paintball) are a Liar!
Fred Thompson actually said: "The immigration problem has to do with immigration..."
I was right.
smellybean weasels: No, I will not apologize to Captainpaintball
You are a small man. Or woman. I am guessing woman.
Posts 38, and 145-149 apply to you as well. Because you posess such a stunning intellect that defies comprehension by mortal men, and a brain that is unmatched in all of Freeperdom, you will see who is right and who is wrong. Sine you are the second coming of Albert Einstein, reading these posts once may not be effective, because your brain is too powerful to accept such minor facts. So have one of your children read it to you, slowly, three times, and see if that works. The sad thing is that people like you, who have the reasoning and research skills of the very moronic mainstream media you accuse me of aping, you probably have a better job than me, and a nicer house. (Talk about an injust world) While I’m stuck here replying to humanoids like you.
Sorry, but I have to side with jellybean on this, you really took a few words out of context to make a quote and then continue to pound at people in a harsh, insulting way.
jellybean gave the context of the quote in post 120 and there is nothing wrong with you asking him to apologize for using the word “liar”, but trying to mislead a thread like you did, is no good thing either.
Are you trying to cause me an aneurysm? LOOK AT POST 149!!! Are you serious? I wasn’t trying to mislead a thread, that’s what he said, and I remembered him saying that. Medved did not play the gigantic quote, he played that sentence and maybe one or two after that. Wow. I am in Bizarro World.
I thought the same thoughts as you, except that he did great. I think he needed to be like he was in the commericial, and that new speech he made. Thank you for a civil disagreement, and let's hope he continues strong through the campain trail. When he decides to run.
Hehe.
McCain and the democrats shut down exposure for people who are running: more “free speech” courtesy of McClaim-Mygold “reforms”
No sorry here.
The way I was reading it is you made this post that drew jellybean’s correction.
“”””He was pretty bad. “The immigration problem is about immigration.” was one of his quotes, more or less.””””
Then jellybean posted the context, whereas you didn’t even quote the whole sentence.
“”””One of those things is border security. The immigration problem has to do with immigration, but it in large part has to do with national security. We live in a world now we’ve inherited. A world that is watching the attempted marriage between radical Islamic fundamentalism and nuclear technology.””””
He knows whether he's running; you don't know.
