Likely to Win Senate Approval
NRO ^ | May 23,2007 | Kate O'Beirne

Maybe I've been talking to a particularly pessimistic lot, but every Senate insider I have spoken with predicts that the immigration bill will be approved by the Senate with about 60 votes. That could change depending on how amendments go. But one veteran GOP aide just noted the "extraordinary process" Majority Leader Reid is presiding over. He is "slow-walking" amendments to prevent the consideration of multiple changes. After the Memorial Day recess, the expectation is that only a very limited number of amendments will be permitted and there aren't the 41 votes necessary to insist on a more open process. There's some grousing about the Republican leadership's apparent reluctance to demand that their members be permitted to offer all their legitimate, substantive amendments.

We used to think that we had a better system of government, than nations like Thailand, where the military threw out the prime minister and took over last year. And yet we behold our rotten-to-the core senate hell-bent on ignoring the citizens and passing an unbelievably sinister, ill-conceived, and disastrous amnesty bill.

How much hope is there? What are the odds?

The Senate GOP told us to go hang when they voted to shut down the filibuster earlier this week. The fix was in and the rest is all much ado about nothing.

“And yet we behold our rotten-to-the core senate hell-bent on ignoring the citizens and passing an unbelievably sinister, ill-conceived, and disastrous amnesty bill.”

John Harrington’s warning about treason comes to mind, yet again.

“Treason doth never prosper, what’s the reason? For if treason doth prosper, none dare call it treason.”

My biggest disappointment was that Kyl presided over the destruction of the party and the country. Thanks AZ.

He’s not alone in that.

I never would have throught a Republican President would work to dissolve the nation.

From what I’ve been reading, a large number of Democrats are against this bill.

That is our only hope, I think.

For the Republicans, this is an issue of semantics. They say, when you punish people for past crimes (overstaying their visas or entering the US illegally), and make them pay restitution and put them at the back of the line for citizenship — you are not granting them “amnesty.”

Therefore, the Republicans simply ignore those who call it “amnesty” as uninformed morons. They feel free to vote for this immigration reform bill.

I’m not sure that’s true about the first cloture vote. I heard that was a cloture vote to begin debate, not end it. 95% of the senators had not even read it yet. I am in Texas, but I called McConnell’s office in KY. The lady said he wanted to filibuster. Maybe that’s just a Pontius Pilate (”Nothing I can do about it”) kind of stance, since he knows he doesn’t have 41 votes aganst, but we’ll see.

Send in the Fat Lady. Time for the music part of the show. Oh, wait! The Dog and Pony Show isn’t over yet, is it? Okay, then. Send in the clowns! Oh, wait! The high-wire act hasn’t crashed and burned yet ... or has it? I can’t see too well under this pile of elephant dung.

It’s not just that AZ is bad, nearly all the states are now bad, based on the kind of clowns that gullible voters latch onto.

How serious do I take this? I read but dont participate much right now. However, I am becoming uneasy about this. Can someone send me a quick email address for Kbailey and/or Cornyn. I live in Michael Burgess’s district, how does he stand?

Mexican Amnesty Activists Have A Direct Line to OUR Senators!

For those of you having difficulty getting thru to your senator, here is the 800 # paid for by the Mexican Amnesty Activists:

800-882-2005

This will get you directly to your senator unlike the #’s available to the US Citizen.

Press 1 when you hear a Spanish message, then Press 1 again to be transferred to your senior senator’s office

OR

Press 2 when you hear a Spanish message, and you’ll be transferred to your junior senator’s office.

You get through immediately and the call is paid for by the enemy!

The Senate passed an even less conservative immigration bill last year, and now there are more Dem senators, so why is there such shock that the Senate will pass this bill that is more conservative than last year’s.

KBailey and Cornyn are both saying they are against this abomination....but we shall see... I suspect Cornyn is good for a NO vote, but I’m not sure someonw won’t get to KB. Dr. Burgess is solidly against this measure he was great on the radio this morning discussing this.

Somebody opined that KBH would vote YES is hers is the required vote for passage: otherwise NO.

The irony is that most who post here are against campus finance reform. But consider this: the only reason Republican politicians are voting for this bill is that (1) corporations want it passed (corporations get to get cheap labor), and (2) corporations have the politicians in their pocket. If campaign finance had been reformed so that big business could not “buy” politicians with their campaign contribution, would so many Republican senators have voted for this bill? Unlikely.

Please, think about this.

Did last yesr’s bill have a Z-visa?

I think Menendez (D NJ) might vote against it, although he voted YEA last year. We may see more Dem NAY votes than Kennedy would like.

McCain might as well vote YEA, he’s roadkill, but will Clinton and Obama have the nerve to vote at all?

I guess O’Beirne knows more about it than I do. Even if it does pass the Senate, though, every vote counts. If we end up with only 25 against it will be harder to oppose it in the House.

Has a thread been posted for FReepers to post what senators and house members from which states they have spoken to and how they are voting? My 2 senators are a definite NO, and I have called the offices of many of the obvious no votes. If any are on the fence(no pun intended)perhaps we can get a list posted for us to target calls?
