There was a time when Fred Thompson suggested that he couldn't see himself running for office again. "For me, the George Washington example of serving eight years and riding out of town on a horse and never returning has great appeal," the Tennessee Republican said in 2002, the twilight of his eight-year Senate career. Now, five years later, he is a well-known TV actor who finds himself on the verge of a real-life presidential bid, seemingly recruited by activists hungry for someone to fill what they see as a conservative void among the top-tier GOP hopefuls. (Watch why some Republicans want Thompson to run ) Numerous signs point to a Thompson candidacy, and a summertime announcement is widely expected, although people close to him caution that he has not made a final decision about running. Never mind that he basically already is. Thompson is hiring staff, speaking to conservative groups, writing online columns on topics of the day and staking out positions on issues like the Senate immigration overhaul. He also is testing his pitch on the Internet. "It's important to the future of this country that (Republicans) have somebody that can win in November," Thompson said in a recent online interview.

My guess is a lot of people have been paying close attention ... ever since January when the quest was kicked off to get a real conservative in the race .... Yeeee Haaaa
What’s a good source for Thompson’s positions and voting record? Has he been consistent over time on his stands?
I understand Fred’s reasons for waiting to declare, but I’m blue in the face waiting anyhow.
About as Conservative as anyone on here. There are a bunch of videos floating around and a couple of websites ... He is good on the Iraq war, terror, smaller government, federalism and the border fence first. The real deal

Can anyone think of a Presidential candidate in recent history that walked away from power?
I know he had a tragedy at the time that contributed to that decision. But I am still impressed with it.
I think it is a good trait.

I was chatting with a hilibot liberal, and they asked (sarcastically) who I might support..
I said “Fred Thompson”.
the laughing reply was “The actor ?!!?”
I smiled, and said:
“Yup ~~ and we all know how that worked out last time..”
The turned somewhat pale, and said nothing further.

I’ll get some of it from a government site as time allows. Hunter’s quite a bit more conservative on immigration and foreign relations, but Thompson has celebrity status and the like.
He wrote the double fence border bill which congress is refusing to impliment. He has been the chairman of the House Armed services committee until this past election. He is a Vietnam Vet who son has served two tours in Iraq!
I have nothing against Thompson but he has not been in the race thus far and if he does enter there's no reason to believe that he will perform any better than the second tier candidates are now. The media are shoving Rudy and Mitt and Hillary and Obama down our throats. What makes you think they will stop when Fred finally shows up? We have to stop looking at this like it is American Idol and take back the election process from the enemy. That has to start from within your own head and heart.

Hunter has been there since 1980 and HE wrote the fence bill and is trying to get congress to obey it's own LAW!
