Phil Spector's trial judge issued a legal smackdown to Dr. Henry Lee yesterday as he dubbed the famed O.J. Simpson forensics expert a liar.

Judge Larry Paul Fidler dealt a huge blow to the music producer's defense when he said he believed Lee spirited a possibly damning piece evidence from the crime scene at Spector's mansion, then fibbed to the court about it.

Several witnesses testified they saw Lee pick up a small white object - which prosecutors think was shooting victim Lana Clarkson's fingernail from Spector's foyer.

Prosecutors wanted the nail because damage patterns on it might have shown the nightclub hostess was trying to fight for her life when she was shot in Spector's home in 2003.

Lee took the witness stand last week and vigorously denied he took anything.

I’ve already heard Judge Napolitano and Geraldo rise to his defense in no uncertain terms. But I was fortunate to catch the judge issue his statement that he sided with one specific witness who saw Lee put what looked like a fingernail in a baggie. And I heard them refer to a Lee impeachment. Well, well.

What one wonders is: Why was he allowed at the crime scene? How did he manage to find evidence that the police forensic team missed?

The problem is that if he was planting evidence, then the prosecution would have it. The allegation is that he removed evidence that was damaging to the defense. That’s why I was wondering why he found it and the police investigators didn’t.
