Mary Cheney gave birth today to perhaps the most anticipated baby in contemporary U.S. politics -- her first child, Samuel David Cheney, whom she will raise with her longtime partner Heather Poe.

The 8-pound, 6-ounce boy is the sixth grandchild for Dick Cheney.

It takes a strong relationship to last that long and I commend their devotion.

You are back to square one. You are making a mistake about judging relationships simply based on longevity.

Many dysfunctional relationships last just as long. I once counseled a guy who was married to a woman for 20 years and he never realized she was an alcoholic, even though everyone else knew. He never realized she had spent all their money even though the bank balances proved it.

He needed to stay in denial about it until their child was 18 and on his own. He really truly didn't notice his marriage and his life was a disaster. His mind kept it from him. This kind of thing happens all the time.

So, again your assumption that a couple that is together for 16 years "takes a strong relationship to last that long" is simply wrong and naive and ignores the reality of relationships.

If you don't know them personally then you have no idea whether their relationship is commendable.

It matters in the life of every person.

There really is no need for you to address me in vulgar terms for pointing out a fact.

How is this relevant to the politics? It sounds like “nosy neighbor syndrome” to me... The fascination of the lives of people different from yourself.

This is not a comment about the Cheneys, but are you aware that this is the foundation of the "logic" liberals use when defending abortion and same sex marriage?

Respectfully, will we now be applying the "nosy neighbor syndrome" logic to these issues, too?

I hope Samuel will spend a lot of time with Grampa Dick. Can't think of a better man to be a role-model, apart from a real father.

Amen to that.

I am praying that Grandpa and Grandma Cheney have lots of quality time with this newest family member. For all the ways that this is not the best situation, God loves Samuel and Mary and her partner, and every member of the family, and He has a plan for all of their lives, to give them a good future and a good hope. I pray the baby comes into the Kingdom of God at a young age and has the ability to discern and love the right. I pray God sends and keeps a very large contingent of angels around him all the days of his life, to protect and help him understand the Father God who loves him and gave him his life.

It’s this whole homosexual marriage issue again. Since Cheney is against same-sex marriage and his lesbian daughter is in a relationship and having a baby, the MSM tries to make this seem like Cheney will be hypocritical by welcoming his new grandson. On the other hand, he would be seen as heartless if he rejected the little guy because of his opposition to gay marriage or relationships. Either way, they have wanted to make Dick Cheney look bad.

It is annoying. Dick Cheney has time and again stood by his daughter and the choices she has made, even if he may not have agreed with them. I'm not a fan of his, but I give him credit for he and his wife supporting their daughter and their new grandson.

Some people act like he should have nothing to do with her. Some of these same people claim to be Christians as well, which makes you wonder if they've ever asked themselves "what would Jesus do?" (Cliche, perhaps, the truth, yes).

Oh Come on, I never said that. I said in the life issues: abortion, cloning, artificial insemination, sex change operations, homosexuality - what other voice is right every time? If there is one please let me know. I didn’t mean to wade into a Protestant/Catholic debate.

"what would Jesus do?"

Matthew 19: 14

But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” 15 And He laid His hands on them and departed from there.

You are back to square one. You are making a mistake about judging relationships simply based on longevity.

Here's what I have said:

"They’ve been together for 16 years."
"I was responding to the broad brush. I commend their commitment to each other."
"...I commend their devotion."
"...I respect the commitment."
"Anyone who makes a relationship last that long deserves some respect for their commitment."

In this day in age, the longevity of the commitment is certainly commendable. AND after 16 years together, they now decide to raise a child. They are obviously deeply committed to each other and I respect that.

I'm not one to judge people's relationships, but I will commend them when they act honorably.

Sorry, deliberately bringing a child into the world without a daddy is anything but "honorable." It's self-centered and selfish.

My best wishes to the Cheneys and Poes in what must be a joyous time for all. The child will raised by two upstanding Americans who have the blessings of their own parents, and that’s all that matters to me.

Do you realize how many couples have children thinking it will solve problems in their relationship and the kids they have end up suffering right along with the parents?

I admire your belief that longevity has a correlation to the quality of a relationship but its not a very reliable indicator.

Neither you nor I have any clue as to the quality of their relationship.

When the uncle of a friend of mine came out as gay years ago, his parents, both very devout Catholics were initially quite upset. Eventually, all of his other siblings wound up getting divorced, and he and his partner have been together twenty-five years and counting, and so now, his parents are all "well, we at least brought you up right".

Maybe that baby will be as obnoxious as Rosie O’Donnell.

With no standard, polygamy is on the horizon.

Wilfred Brimirly too funny

That's not Wilford Brimley, it's "David Crosby of "Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young" fame.

Swath remembered that "he donated sperm to fellow musician Melissa Etheridge so that she and her lesbian partner at the time, Julie Cypher, could have two babies."

My concern.....very simply

..these two women don't like men...right.

They have a boy baby....who grows to a young man

How do they explain their negativity to men--to him...

..won't this affect him?...How can it not.
