Apparently, my position on immigration is that we must deport all 12 million illegal aliens immediately, inasmuch as this is billed as the only alternative to immediate amnesty. The jejune fact that we "can't deport them all" is supposed to lead ineluctably to the conclusion that we must grant amnesty to illegal aliens and fast!
I'm astounded that debate has sunk so low that I need to type the following words, but: No law is ever enforced 100 percent.
We can't catch all rapists, so why not grant amnesty to rapists? Surely no one wants thousands of rapists living in the shadows! How about discrimination laws? Insider trading laws? Do you expect Bush to round up everyone who goes over the speed limit? Of course we can't do that. We can't even catch all murderers. What we need is "comprehensive murder reform." It's not "amnesty" we'll ask them to pay a small fine.
If it's "impossible" to deport illegal aliens, how did we come to have so much specific information about them? I keep hearing they are Catholic, pro-life, hardworking, just dying to become American citizens, and will take jobs other Americans won't. Someone must have talked to them to gather all this information. Let's find that guy he must know where they are!
How do we even know there are 12 million of them? Why not 3 million, or 40 million? Maybe we should put the guy who counted them in charge of deporting them.
If the 12-million figure is an extrapolation based on the number of illegal immigrants in public schools or emergency rooms and well-manicured lawns in Brentwood, then shouldn't we be looking for them at schools and hospitals and well-manicured lawns in Brentwood?
>>>>Chertoff on C-Span this morning said DHS and another group did their own independent study of how many illegals were in this country. ANYBODY TRUST THEM?
Never trust Chertoff!
I have seen the word before, and I didn’t exactly know its meaning. So reluctantly, after your post, I actually looked it up, and then went back to the article to see how it was used. But that’s what Ann does, keeps us on our toes.
Litening to Fox News, Peter Johnson Jr, a Fox News analyst, just used the word jejune. It’s spreading!
It's not workable if you assume that the US would have to individually deport 12 million people.
It becomes workable if you create conditions that would cause them to leave under their own power
As an extreme, if the US started grabbing illegals and selling them to Cuba or China as slave labor, do you think there would be many illegals to be found in the US within 24 hours?
Somewhere between that extreme, and the current situation, is a package of disincentives that would result in a majority of illegals leaving
The first number is pretty much in line with what I heard from an employee of a relevant Federal agency.
Yeah. It's those eeevil businesses.Wouldn't do that much for corporate contributions would it?
I notice you didn't have a suggestion as to why if the government knows that someone has hired an illegal, it doesn't just deport the illegal. Then the eeevil business would die for lack of cheap labor and you would be happy.
Democrats also passed the Jim Crow laws, and continue to push for race-based preferences. They truly need to have people treated differently in the eyes of the law according to their racial make-up, don't they?
Couldn't have said THAT any better. Good post.
Ping for Ann...
I agree that it is an erroneous claim, but why call it 'Bush's claim'? That claim has been around a very long time, and was even used when the discussions about Reagan's amnesty bill were taking place. (I don't recall Reagan ever saying it, but others did.)
That would be the special interest lobby groups these "business'" paid donations to,to have them lobby politicians, for some lame-ass bill to allow illegal immigrants amnesty.
“Importing a slave class”
I have to remember that one. Its perfect.

> Dear Senator Sarbanes,
>
> As a native Marylander and excellent customer of the Internal
Revenue Service, I am writing to ask for your assistance. I have contacted the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to determine the process for becoming an illegal alien and they referred me to you.
>
> My primary reason for wishing to change my status from U.S.
Citizen to illegal alien stems from the bill which was recently passed by the Senate and for which you voted. If my understanding of this bill’s provisions is accurate, as an illegal alien who has been in the United States for five years, all I need to do to become a citizen is to pay a $2,000 fine and income taxes for three of the last five years. I know a good deal when I see one and I am anxious to get the process started before everyone figures it out.
>
> Simply put, those of us who have been here legally have had to pay
taxes every year so I’m excited about the prospect of avoiding two years of taxes in return for paying a $2,000 fine. Is there any way that I can apply to be illegal retroactively? This would yield an excellent result for me and my family because we paid heavy taxes in
2004 and 2005.
>
> Additionally, as an illegal alien I could begin using the local
emergency room as my primary health care provider. Once I have stopped paying premiums for medical insurance, my accountant figures I could save almost $10,000 a year. Another benefit in gaining illegal status would be that my daughter would receive preferential treatment relative to her law school applications, as well as “in- state” tuition rates for many colleges throughout the United States for my son.
>
> Lastly, I understand that illegal status would relieve me of the
burden of renewing my driver’s license and making those burdensome car insurance premiums. This is very important to me given that I still have college-age children driving my car.
>
> If you would provide me with an outline of the process to become
illegal(retroactively if possible) and copies of the necessary forms, I would be most appreciative. Thank you for your assistance.

English”?
Priceless...
This is a huge “screw you” to both citizens AND people who are here trying to do this legally. Why are we rewarding those who break the rules?
These days, it’s mighty hard to survive on 10.00 an hr. My bf remembers when he was working in heating and air. The owner slowly replaced Americans/legals with illegals. This guy was also so cheap and unscrupulous, that he made the workers hike the equipment around instead of using cranes. My bf blew out his lower back in his late 20’s, and he and others filed a class action lawsuit, and won.
Illegals didn’t have that option, back then anyway.
Even though construction is hard work, it is possible to work your way up to becoming a developer or contractor, like you said. All it takes is iniative and hard work. However you get owners who don’t care about anything but the bottom line. A couple of developers are being sued up here for shoddy construction. One family had to rent a hotel room because their brand new home was unliveable. That didn’t use to happen like it does now.
Your father’s friend gave you good advice. It was possible to start out as a dishwasher, and end up owning your own restaurant. Oh well, slaves are much easier to control than free people :(
Nah, I would call it gracious, accomodating and clear thinking, /s as well as a relatively rare glimpse into the motivations of alot of the "insult a spic for patriotism" crowd that shows up in any forum on these issues. Give yourself a gold star. I'm fresh out.
You make a lot of sense. I blame this more on governments than business.
You wanna see the laws enforced? GREAT. Make em enforceable. In the meantime "TROLL" don't give me some decerebrated mindless flapdoodle about how business owners should be held repsonsible for enforcing laws that are not on the books and have no way of attaining the info necessary to enforce them. That kind of gibberish is the reason that I not only fear the left in this country (I have been resisting socialism before you were a gleam in your dad's eye), but I also fear the utterly senseless moronic pinheads now on the RIGHT who are willing to surrender any liberty, cede any power to the fed and destroy liberty in the name of "law enforcement." Pathetic halfwits whose idea of "conservatism" means that if Rush or Anne Coulter didn't say it, it did not happen. Conservatives USED to be about protecting liberty. These twits are truly aghast if you tell them that the dictionary definition of "fascism" is patriotic statism. And they are statists, only too stupid to know it. Congratulate yourself for being a brave defender of American values and have a nice day.
cheers
DoP
In addition to initiative and hard work I would add that it takes some amount of capital to become your own boss. If your wages don't even pay the bills that's going to be a tough one.
I remember years ago someone told me a joke about how carpenter's girlfriends/wives were usually nurses or a bank teller. IOWs a gal with an equally good working class wage plus health benefits. (so vital to a construction worker who often had to work for someone that didn't have workman's comp.) I chuckled as I thought about that for a minute and realized just how many carpenters I knew that did have gfs/wives like that.
That was in the 70s and 80s and such a couple w/two decent incomes and health coverage could buy a home, raise a family and maybe each get out of being employees (do something to secure the finances IOWs) IF they worked hard, watched expenses and had just a bit of opportunity along the way.
I guess a lot of 25 and 30 yr olds today are in tech jobs instead but those aren't very secure or well paying from what I'm told. Those jobs also require some education before getting a first paycheck unlike the trades. I'm sure it's much harder to become a company owner in the tech field too. This is a huge negative for this country.
