THE American Right is up in arms. The new immigration-reform bill announced with great fanfare last week is, say my fellow conservatives, a disaster of Biblical proportions. Virtual spittle is being expectorated all over the senators who negotiated the terms of the bill and the White House, which supports it.
Anti-immigration conservatives are the most vocal people in the country when it comes to saying that our immigration system is broken. But now they have been presented with an "immigration reform" bill that attempts to address some of their concerns, and they're screaming bloody murder about it.
They're right to scream bloody murder. These comprehensive legislative solutions - the sorts of bills that run hundreds of pages in length and are written in impenetrable gobbledygook - are almost always disastrous.
They are jerry-rigged, rickety affairs whose language is inexact and imprecise by design. They often do the opposite of what they are intended to do. The best (or worst) example is the big 1996 bill that was intended to slice away regulation from the telecom industry - and merely ended up handing out gifts to big companies.
Critics of the immigration bill have already gone through it with a fine-tooth comb and found dozens of instances in which tough-sounding provisions are revised and undercut pages later.

Leave it to an Al Franken admirer to be surprised, lol.
Good question, and you’re right about the current abuses vs past abuses.
May any Republican office holder pay dearly for supporting anything but that which will secure and I do say SECURE the border.
Further, any immigration policy that is passed must have stiffer enforced penalties to businesses who hire illegal immigrants. Dry up what is attracting illegals and they will go home. Screw the argument that we cannot deport them all. WE don't need to deport them all. Just take away the reason for them coming, and they will go away.
Conservatives are anti-ILLEGAL-immigration.
It is a good question. A lot of people talk tough, but when it comes right down to it... it isn’t an easy thing to do.
I am sick of these illegals who presume upon our generosity and have the gall to EXPECT what they are not entitled to.
The one thing I am not hearing from these treasonous senators is a demand for political reform in Mexico.
Why is it that WE as Americans somehow have this obligation to give these illegals anything?
With any immigration bill, there should be mandates that the Mexican government reform.
Mexico is a wealthy country despite all the misconceptions.
Mexico’s infrastructure is abhorrent. We as Americans can’t even drink the water down their, we will instantly become ill.
Most Mexican cities smell of sewage because of the sub-standard waste disposal system. There environmental standards are that of a developing 3rd world country. Spewing pollution into the air, ground and waterways.
Mexico has oil, precious metals, gems, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing. The wealthy socialist suck the juice of life out of their own country.
In fact, the indigenous people of Mexico are oppressed by those who have a Spanish linage rather than Indian.
Mexico is one of the most corrupt countries on the planet. Murder, kidnappings, drugs, extortion, bribery, slavery and the like are a daily way of life in this 3rd world country to our south.
I am pro “immigrants that don’t cost 19K net a year”.
I prefer no Islamic immigrants. They are trouble.
I think it is time to disband The Senate.
Useless trolls set up to screw the American People, TIMES’ UP.
If it wasn’t for our Ancestors building America these HalfBrained WETBACKS would be still up to their Necks in disease, poverty and ignorance in their beloved MEXICO.
Get a GRIP, GET ‘EM OUT.
I think your dad is right. This is like the anti-military NO-money-two-month military spending bills that Bush has vetoed recently. “You want an immigration bill?” And then they put every single rotten thing on it they would love, knowing that 1) their names will be seen on it, 2) those who oppose it will be villified and 3) that it will be too outrageous to ever pass.
>>a disaster of Biblical proportions.<<
Do you remember these lines from Ghostbusters?
“Dr. Peter Venkman: This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
Mayor: What do you mean, “biblical”?
Dr Ray Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath-of-God type stuff.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Exactly.
Dr Ray Stantz: Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies. Rivers and seas boiling.
Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness. Earthquakes, volcanoes...
Winston Zeddemore: The dead rising from the grave.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria.”
And...
“It’s true, that man has no d**k.”
When the time comes (and it might), I can and will pick up a weapon in defense of my country against my government. But it’s not something I would relish or look forward to.
"If not now, when? If not us, who?"
If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no recourse left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government, and which against the usurpations of the national rulers may be exerted with infinitely better prospect of success than against those of the rulers of an individual State. In a single State, if the persons intrusted with supreme power become usurpers, the different parcels, subdivisions, or districts of which it consists, having no distinct government in each, can take no regular measures for defense. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms, without concert, without system, without resource; except in their courage and despair.
[T]he people, without exaggeration, may be said to be entirely the masters of their own fate. Power being almost always the rival of power, the general government will at all times stand ready to check the usurpations of the state governments, and these will have the same disposition towards the general government. The people by throwing themselves into either scale, will infallibly make it preponderate. If their rights are invaded by either, they can make use of the other as the instrument of redress. How wise will it be in them by cherishing the union to preserve to themselves an advantage which can never be too highly prized! Hamilton Federalist #28
Time to pick a scale and get to correcting...
We should demand the same immigration policy as Mexico has. How could Mexico complain? (Silly me, of course they will anyway.)
I am offended that this self-appointed elite tolerates such slum conditions in America. I do not think it is a fit place to live, and in their benevolence I do not think they are offering illegals anything worth having. They keep saying that illegals are hard working families, but I always refused to raise my family in NYC and, as far as I am concerned, it is not good enough for nice people. I know that all of us are diminished when we allow such abasement of rights to continue. If illegals would be even worse off going home, that is outside my control. But filling tennements with illegals so landlords can collect rents on homes that should be demolished and pseudo teachers can have jobs where they don't teach, and medium income people have servants is just base corruption.
There’s a big difference between hysteria and indignation. John is just another elite that has become disconnected with the people of this country. His logic comes from a dependence on input from his own circle, a form of inbred thought.
My parents parents were poor. My parents we able to better that by quite a bit. Now I'm finding it increasingly difficult to get ahead partially because of all the road blocks the government puts in the way.
This trend cannot continue. If it does, our country will collapse. Not an "if" anymore, it's a "when".
“Anti-immigration conservatives”
It’s anti ILLEGAL ALIEN John. Get it right.
Bush constantly insults our intelligence when he says such things as:
1)"The Religions of Peace".
The bastards want to kill us all and they have said so.
2) "Job's Americans won't do."
Many of the people in my rather rural area make their living doing the jobs Americans won't do.
Bush is an elitist, condescending politician. He's just a little more polite than most.
Not to mention that most of these idiots are greenies, and the new citizens will soon consume their fair share of energy. So meeting those stoopid carbon reduction goals will be doubly hard, won't it?
