Illegal immigrants' thoughts on immigration bill
KVOA.com ^ | Amber Lyon

Immigration reform will take center stage in the senate next week as lawmakers hope to have a new bill completed by Memorial Day.

The deal includes granting quick legal status to illegal immigrants already in the U.S., creating a temporary worker program for new arrivals, and it calls for new high-tech enforcement measures to verify that workers are here legally.

Part of that is the Z Visa, a document that illegal immigrants would apply for in order to gain citizenship.

They would also have to pay $5,000 in fines.

That aspect of the new immigration deal is drawing mixed reactions from migrant workers already working here in Arizona.

News 4 visited a Tucson street corner where local illegal immigrants wait for construction and landscaping work.

There, we found Marcos who supports the new immigration deal. He came to the U.S. illegally five years ago to make money to send to his five children back in Mexico.

He told us "It's very difficult because they are so far away."

Every time Marcos travels home to visit, he risks his life; taking a dangerous trip with coyotes through the scorching desert.

Under the new immigration deal, illegal immigrants will have to come forward to get a visa that will allow them to stay in the country. But in order to get on the path to citizenship, they'll have to shell out $5,000. That's a price some say they're willing to pay.

"It's much better to be paying the U.S. then to be paying the coyotes every time you cross," Marcos tells us. "Paying the coyotes is expensive. People will pay. $5,000 is not a lot of money."

Mario has been here 15 years. He still doesn't have papers. If the new deal will grant him citizenship, he says, it's priceless.

"If they let me stay here to work... Because I don't want be hiding from the police. I'm not a criminal."

Some of the men we met at the corner say under this new deal, the wait's just too long. And the price is way too high."

"It's expensive," says Fernando, "and very difficult to raise the money that we, the ones who earn only one or two hundred dollars a week, can't afford."

Fernando says jobs for illegals are never steady. It would be a nightmare to raise thousands of dollars for his dream of citizenship. He has two young children and a wife to feed back in Mexico.

"It's very difficult because they're small. I am causing them psychological conflict because they can't be with their father."

Also under the bill, it will take eight to thirteen years just to qualify to apply for citizenship. Many of these men say, with the constant threat of deportation, that's too long to wait.

As the immigration deal makes it way through Washington, News 4 will have continuing coverage, bringing you all the new developments as they happen

A simple question: If Teddy “The Swimmer” Kennedy is so hellbent on making Mexicans into Americans, why doesn’t he simply introduce a bill in the Senate to annex Mexico?

Whatever happened with the law that “ no profit can be made from criminal activity”?

Corporations clearly profit from hiring illegals.

“that’s too long to wait”

HEAR THAT all you Rep. congresspeople who have thrown in with these demanding, insolent non citizens. NOTHING will stop the flow of ILLEGALS except for border enforcement and employer enforcement of the laws that are now on our books. Vote for this immigration “policy” that kennedy is ramming down our throats and you are not only destroying the GOP, you aare also destroying the USA.

“I am causing them psychological conflict because they can’t be with their father”

Exactly. It’s not our mean old government or the infrequent raids that cause the problem, it’s the illegals themselves.

LAWS

1.There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools,

no special ballots for elections, and all government

business will be conducted in our language.

2. Foreigners will NOT have the right to vote,

no matter how long they are here.

3. Foreigners will NEVER be able to hold political office.

4. Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers.

No welfare, no food stamps, no health care,

nor any other government assistance programs.

5. Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be

an amount equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage.

6. If foreigners do come and want to buy land that will be okay,

BUT options will be restricted. You are not allowed to own

waterfront property. That property is reserved for citizens

naturally born into this country.

7. Foreigners may not protest; no demonstrations, no waving

a foreign flag, no political organizing, no “bad-mouthing”

our president or his policies. If you do you will be sent

home.

8. If you do come to this country illegally, you will be

hunted down and sent straight to jail.

Harsh, you say?... please copy and forward to the DC moron of your choice. Please add that their time of living like “Royalty” will be shortened by the American people as each of them comes up for re-election. Time for these arrogant,”in your face” lunes go back to the private sector and live like the rest of us peons.

Their "Earned Income Credit" will nearly pay this.

“If they let me stay here to work... Because I don’t want be hiding from the police. I’m not a criminal.”

Mario, why are you hiding from the police if you are not a criminal? Oh yeah! Because you entered the country illegally...thus making you a criminal! Better work harder at your English Vocabulary...start with criminal, then move on to illegal. Ah, what the heck...try amnesty while you are there.

Correction: Vote for this immigration “policy” that BUSH is ramming down our throats and you are not only destroying the GOP, you aare also destroying the USA.

Sorry, now I feel better ;) Not that I don’t hold Kennedy responsible, but from Kennedy, crap like this is expected...NOT from the Republican President I elected for his strength on national security!

Use properly structured sentences using words and logic at the William F. Buckley level and you’ll not only control your passion but totally flummox the staffer and send them to the Webster’s Unabridged dictionary to figure out what you said. Then once they’ve looked up the words they’ll be red-faced at finding out that not only did you insult their intelligence but accused them of not having legitimate parentage as well as being the result of perverse interspecies breeding.
