The crowd at South Carolina's Republican convention cheered Saturday when Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney criticized a new immigration proposal and booed a key ally of U.S. Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) when he defended it.

The immigration compromise between key senators and the White House played strongly at the convention as more than 1,000 delegates and Republican activists gathered. Many in the crowd wore stickers with "Senate amnesty bill" crossed out.
They cheered as presidential candidate Romney told them: "One simple rule: No amnesty."
During his speech and before his remarks, Romney said a proposed new visa for immigrants amounts to amnesty if it can be renewed indefinitely.
"If that's not a form of amnesty, I don't know what is," Romney said.
The crowd booed South Carolina U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (news, bio, voting record), a key ally of McCain in both his 2000 and 2008 presidential bids, when he said he had worked with U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., on the immigration legislation.
"It's the best bill I think we can get to President Bush," Graham said as some in the crowd shouted "No!"
Graham was cheered earlier in his speech when he talked about the war in Iraq.
After the speech, Graham said he was booed on immigration because "it's an emotional topic. People are mad."
South Carolina's other U.S. senator, Jim DeMint (news, bio, voting record), is on opposite sides from Graham: He supports Romney and said he opposes an immigration bill that allows permanent residency of illegal aliens.

Mitt Romney is on the money. And John McCain again proves that he deserves nothing but skepticism.
Bravo!
Conservatives need to break from their traditional civility and and get VERY vocal about this.
I still say Lindsey’s a girl’s name. I think he’s afraid the home folks will find out he uses the same hairdresser as Joan Edwards.
I do agree that there needs to be a real conservative (with name I.D., of course) offer a primary challenge to Graham.
Yes, and the people are mad at you, Senator Graham, you and the rest of the Congress that is working for the Mexican government instead of working for American citizens.
Lindsey Ping
Thing is, the conservatives need to rally around a first-rate candidate. One who first came to mind for me is Dr. Henry Jordan. But he once said, “Screw the Budhists, kill the Muslims.” Clearly, he’s too careless.
I once heard the name Tom Ravenel, but he was just elected state Treasurer and would be accused of office-shopping and neglecting his current duties.
What are the latest poll numbers from S. Carolina? I know Mitt has pulled ahead in New Hampshire and Iowa, he’ll win Michigan, if you throw in South Carolina as well....he’s got the nomination.
This is GOOD! All the threads you posted today are packed with good news for Romney! What a boost! : )
Thanks for the ping, Cf. Romney indeed hit the bullseye with this one! : )
