State Sen. Migden In Car Crash; Cell Phone Blamed
(CBS 5 / AP / BCN) FAIRFIELD State Sen. Carole Migden rear-ended a car on Highway 12 near Fairfield Friday that left one person with minor injuries, the California Highway Patrol said.
Migden, D-San Francisco, was traveling eastbound on the highway at Beck Avenue when she failed to notice traffic stopping for a red light at around 10:40 a.m., according to CHP Officer M.A. Williford.
Migden's 2007 Toyota Highlander then collided into the rear of a 2005 Honda sedan.
Migden was apparently reaching for her ringing cell phone just before she hit the sedan, the senator's office said in a statement.
"In reaching for the phone, (Migden) took her eyes off the road," spokeswoman Tracy Fairchild said in the statement. "She was not injured, and later passed a routine breathalyzer test and then she drove her car home."
The driver of the Honda, identified as 31-year-old Ellen Butawan, of Vallejo, suffered minor injuries and was transported as a precaution to NorthBay Hospital.
A 2003 GMC Savanna van in front of Butawan's Honda was also slightly damaged in the collision, Officer Williford said. That driver was uninjured.
No citations were issued, the CHP said. Migden was on her way to a meeting in Marin County at the time of the crash.
CALIFORNIA SENATOR CAROLE MIGDEN rear-ends vehicle sending driver to hospital with minor injuries - KTVU reporter Rob Roth video - Witness alleges Migden did not appear to be all there and screamed, Im a Senator

California Senator Carole Migden this morning rear-ended a vehicle sending its passenger to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.
KTVU-TV reporter Rob Roth is reporting a witness said Migden did not appear to be all there and screamed, Im a Senator.
The senator rear-ended a 2005 Honda sedan, which was slowing to a stop behind a van that had already stopped at a red signal light at the intersection of Beck Avenue and Highway 12 in Solano County, according to a CHP spokesman.
She was given a breathalyzer test which showed Migden was not under the influence of alcohol and no citation was issued.
Migdens office released a statement indicating, While driving to the meeting, Senator Migdens cell phone rang and in reaching for the phone she took her eyes off the road. She was not injured, and later passed a routine breathalyzer test and then she drove her car home. Senator Migden is very grateful that no one was seriously injured.
So it’s the cell phone’s fault.
Who or what is issued a license to drive?
Or a cell phone?
Dastardly cell phones never could drive well.
Another out-of-control leftist in a SUV with a cell phone.
She supported a law that bans use of a cellphone while driving.
What, they have no-fault collisions in Cali?
I’ve seen too many of these people. They can’t drive and talk on the phone at the same time.
I'm glad to see the headline writer is finally placing the blame where it belongs.
ON THE CELL PHONE!!!
And she was driving alone? Very bad. Must buy more Carbon Indulgences from Pope Albert.
After all, it's not like the cell phone was driving the car...
I knew fright wigs would come back in style someday.
Is that Phyllis Diller?
How ironic that she supported legislation to ban cell phone use while driving.
I’m glad there are no serious injuries. But the irony about this is too much to let it pass. She’s so self-important that she just had to take that call on a cell phone while driving. And an accident resulted.
A little humility goes a long way, in my opinion. Hope she become a bit more humble since we see she is a mere mortal like the rest of us.
..not so minor after she sues Migden for all she's worth!
Don't legislators have to follow the same laws as the rest of us?
Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.
One would hope that this discredits her public career. But I’m not holding my breath.
Caption for Midgen: Helllloooooooooooooooo Jon Corzine.
To JDM: Don’t you understand the style sheet of journalism at all? If anything bad happens it is either the SUV’s fault, the gun’s fault, violent videogames, violent music, violent movies, the cell phone’s fault, global warming’s fault, or Bush’s fault(whatever the Nanny Statist’s want to ban, I am sure that the rush to ban fatty foods was because they believed, in all sincerity, that the Twinkie defense was true).
Now run along and take a Columbia J-school class, everyone else can teach you how to behave like a good little Democrat. Afterall, it wasn’t the Radical Muslim’s fault for 9/11, it was the plane’s(Sarc.) or at least to some of those people we deserved it or it was the government’s fault.
Can you just imagine a Style Sheet headline on 9/11, columns on whether the Muslims played Doom, listened to Charles Manson and the like, along with “radical muslims crash two planes into WTC, planes blamed”. How come if any domestic situation happens when shootings occur, something else is always blamed but not the perp? It makes me sick, the Nanny Statist nonsense.
First SUVs caused all the problems...... now we have an SUV’s cell phone causing the problem...... I suppose this dipstick of a Demagogue doesn’t bear any responsibility for almost killing someone (victim was luck to get off so lightly).
p.s. I was rear-ended at a stoplight just a few weeks ago by a dipstick with a cellphone...... fortunately escaped without injury, but I sure am running out of patience for imbeciles who recklessly endanger others!!!
Carole Migden, DEMOCRAT-San Francisco
