Immigration Heats Up South Carolina GOP

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The crowd at South Carolina's Republican convention cheered Saturday when former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney criticized a new immigration proposal and booed a key ally of U.S. Sen. John McCain when he defended it.

The immigration compromise between key senators and the White House played strongly at the convention as more than 1,000 delegates and Republican activists gathered. Many in the crowd wore stickers with "Senate amnesty bill" crossed out.

The crowd booed South Carolina U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a key ally of McCain in both his 2000 and 2008 presidential bids, when he said he had worked with U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., on the immigration legislation.

"It's the best bill I think we can get to President Bush," Graham said as some in the crowd shouted "No!"

[Snip]

After the speech, Graham said he was booed on immigration because "it's an emotional topic. People are mad."

It's past time to kick Lindsey Graham out of the Senate--and Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isaakson also. Kick 'em out, all you Georgia and South Carolina people, at the first opportunity!

As for Chambliss--it's high time to question his judgment!

You think we can kick out Senators from our own party just because we disagree with them on one issue? You’re dreaming!

Well it will be an interesting election cycle if freepers actually go through with their threats. It bothers me when someone says "it's treason when Senator A votes for this bill, but if Senator B votes the same way I'll give him a pass" But I have no problem with holding everyone to the same standards and making them all accountable. Unfortunately, in 2006, 62 Senators supported amnesty for illegals and since then, three Senators who voted NAY -- Jon Kyl, Saxby Chambliss, and Johnny Isakson -- have since gone over to the dark side.

I've been on this forum along time and I remember when scores of freepers called the Congressman and Senators who let Clinton off the hook and vowed to "never again" vote for ANY Republican who opposed impeachment. Well, that "never again" didn't even last til the 2000 election cycle. Not only did they vote for those guys again, alot of freepers now think they're fine and dandy folks and oppose even challenging them in the primary. Congressman Peter King never went on TV and said "gee whiz, with Hillary's career on the rise, I truly regret being a shrill for her husband's sleazy behavior and I will never again support terrorists like my shameful actions in support of the IRA". On the contrary, he's still 100% convinced he was right, and that doesn't stop plenty of "conservatives" from fawning over Peter King cuz he talks a good game on TV.

John McCain is supposedly the most hated person in conservative circles but who among Arizona's six million people steped forward to challenge him in 2004 primary? NO ONE. And then freepers whine when gets re-elected. Hey, Arizona conservatives have only themselves to blame. Get off your butts and find a legitimate challenger.

Will freepers actually "go after" anyone who voted for amnesty, even so-called "true conservatives" like Mitch McConnell, Larry Craig, Saxby Chambliss, Sam Brownback, and Jon Kyl?

I'll believe it when I see it.

Personally I think idel threats mean nothing cuz these Senators know they'll be re-elected easily. Right now we can't even get rid of awful, ultra-liberal RINOs in the primary (Arlen Specter I'm looking at you) I think this bill will pass in the Senate and die a quick death in the house.

Shhh. Don't try to spoil the party for the purists on FR.

Personally, I think the 2006 Conn. primary between Lieberman and Lamont showed you CAN kick someone out of the party who agrees with you 90% of the time, if you have a damn good issue. (Unfortunately, it also showed that "100% pure" candidates almost always go down in flames in the general election. The only "100% pure" Senator we have right now is probably Tom Coburn)

If you try to toss someone out who agrees with you 90% of the time over a stupid issue, the incumbent will score about 85% of the vote and your supporters will become further marginalized, bitter nuts (see the lunatic "conservatives" who went after Sonny Perdue in 2004 because they decided the confederate flag was the most important issue on the planet)

Is immigration a good enough issue to remove someone in the primary? Possibly. It's pretty volatile right now. However, I do think if the Dems had about 12 Senators up for re-election to "go after" for being pro-Iraq war (like we have on pro-amnesty), they would have seriously diluted their impact and not gotten anywhere. Fortunately for them, the only Dem that was steadfastly supportive of Bush was Lieberman, and they focused all their efforts on him.

It's much more practical to go after DINOs and RINOs who REGULARLY support the enemy (the two times we did this -- with Chaffee & Specter, we got THISCLOSE to winning the primary and would succeeded if the white house hadn't intervened).

Unfortunately, it seems alot of people will never learn that lesson no matter how many times their strategy fails.

If the issue is the future and the national security of our country, yes we can. Chambliss and Isakson must’ve lost their minds. As for Graham, he’s already been a despicable little turd for quite some time. This is just par for the course for him.

Well at least you've (finally) decided to finally hold everyone to the SAME standard (unless they're a certain retired "red state" Senator from Tennessee). No double standards. It's a start, I suppose.

You guys are a year late though, aside from Kyl, Chambliss, and Isakson, these guys already voted for amnesty in 2006. I was well aware that many of your "true conservatives" sucked just as badly on immigration as the "RINOs" who also vote 90% conservative.

Well unfortunately for Larry Craig & Sam Brownback & the rest of 'em you've no longer decided it's acceptable for them to vote the same way Graham does.

Look out fellas, the purists are comin' for you next year. And (unlike all the times they promised to stop McCain in the primary) this time they mean it!

This is the last term for John McCain mainly because he is too old and after this move it will prove his contempt for the average Arizonan.

Immigration is an 80% topic here and he is on the wrong side of the issue.

JD is back in town and is looking for a new job. I will help him get it.

We have let the Republican Party be run by a lot of people that have contempt for the base. If we can get a conservative president to veto all the whacked out bills a dem controlled house will deliver it would be good time for some house cleaning.

These rotten Republican Senators only make the rest of the party look bad. We never had a conservative Senate but most of the country thinks that they tried the conservatives and they gave us the same old sh!t. Bush has been no help either. Just look and the Republican numbers sense he got in. We have lost state houses and Governors to the dims.

The RINOS are killing us.

I can see why with a vary small majority in the Senate why we would not want to loose a seat but it not that way any more.

It is time to throw out 5 or 6 Senators and tell the rest they better be on their best behavior.

We should pick out the worst ones and make a national race out of it. It looks like Rush might be with us on this one.

Try to beat them in the primaries( Bush will not be flying in to save them either) and if not let them die in the general.

That's why these elected politicians disregard the wishes of their constituents. That's why the Border's wide open dispite the wishes of the vast majority of the American people. That's why the American people feel ignored, betrayed, and unprotected by their elected officials--because they are.

Look at it this way: If their present constituents don’t vote them out of office, the amnestised illegal aliens will.

You are right. Not only are you right the politicians know it too. Thats why they done fear vooting for bills that Americans dont want. What keeps good people out ofrunning for office? Money. A poor but good candidate hasnt got a prayer and there are no rich candidates that dont want more money-—from lobbyists and slick affairs passing laws the rich want.

Our Republican leaders are there not because they won but because Democrats lost. They won by default. The main problem in politics today is that the two major parties are mirror-images of the British and European Socialist labor parties.

The only one to stand out at the recent Republican debate was Ron Paul and he is an old has-been that never was.

Rudy did himself no good when he said that Paul was
“absurd” for suggesting that the Muslims hit us on 9/11 because he are their enemy and are attacking them.

I suppose Rudy though we were attacked because we did not put foot washing basins in the Newark airport.

BTW, where are all of these “Imams” that are flying all around demanding this and that, and what are they doing? Do they have jobs?

This “one issue” directly affects dozens of other issues (social security, national security, health care, voting rights, jobs, taxes, etc.) Those who vote for this bill do not have the best interests of our country in mind and should not be re-elected. In this case they cannot be “90% conservative” and be given a pass.

I don’t know if i’ve ever seen an issue where the will of the public was so strongly against what the elected representatives who are supposed to serve the people are pushing. Most CITIZENS don’t want this horrible bill and don’t want shamnesty.
