“12) Guest Workers Will Be Eligible For Citizenship
This might not be so bad — if the number of citizens added via the guest worker program were subtracted from the number of foreigners added in via legalization each year — and if these workers, who tend to make low incomes, were ineligible for the earned income tax credit, to receive welfare, their relatives couldn’t also come to the US via chain immigration, etc. However, since none of those conditions apply, what we’re doing is making a lot of people citizens who’re likely to be net drains on the system for decades — just so we can get our dishes washed and strawberries picked a little bit cheaper over the next few years.”
In a word, this is nothing short of shameful. I will repost my rant from earlier. That pretty well sums up my utter disgust.
“Told the brain surgeon answering the phone at my Stalinist Congress Creature’s local office that, as an immigrant, I object strenuously to amnesty, which is exactly what this bill is and attempting to cast it as anything other than amnesty is dishonest, and an insult to my and the rest of America’s intelligence.
Citizenship is a privilege to be earned, not a right to be expected. And residency is a privilege conferred by the US and is not a privilege to be stolen.
The US owes me nothing. It grants me, as an immigrant, through it’s Constitution, the privilege of living here and allowing me to pursue the American dream. And should I earn the privilege, to become a US citizenship. And this right cannot be usurped, or demanded or expected. And it sure as hell cannot be stolen.
One of the proudest days of my life was when I stood at the citizenship ceremony, placed my hand over my heart and recited the Pledge of Allegiance as an American. I’m an American, and I fly my flag with pride and it is nothing short of despicable for someone, in this country illegally, to march in protest in MY country, demanding rights to which they are NOT entitled, all the while waving a Mexican, or an Honduran, or a South African, Ethiopian or any other flag.
They have no commitment or love for this, MY, country. This country is more than a meal ticket. It is the “shining city on the hill” that Ronald Reagan described. It is NOT the shining soup kitchen on the hill.
“And so, my fellow Americans ... ask not what your country can do for you ... ask what you can do for your country.”

bump
this bill is insanity
You have every right to be here, and to be immeensely proud of your sacrifices. America is a land of immigrants... legal immigrants, who came here to assimilate into American society, to give up allegiance to their country and become Americans.
So many in government have forgotten what being an American citizen means. Ours is a history and a spirit of sacrifice and of self-determination. It is a tradition of independence, of self-reliance, of hard work, of courage and of responsibility. We are a civilization built on principles; most importantly, we are a legacy of freedom and a society of laws. THIS IS OUR CULTURE, and it is as unique and as deserving of respect as any other. To become an American means to stand up in unwavering support and in reverence of these essential things, to belong to something that is larger and more powerful than any individual, and to accept this culture as your own. It means not a surrender of your heritage, but an integration of your way of life into that which is American.
immensely... stupid fingers!
Seems to me that all the laws we need governing immigration are, and have been in place for many years. All we need is the Federal Government to do the job the Federal Government was created to do. Enforce those laws.
Lemmings, indeed.
This is a message to our GIs fighting for our country, from the senate “ never mind we just gave the USA away!”
You are absolutely right. This will just increase the flow and do away with those laws, which is what they want.
This bill will require a new army of bureaucrats to untangle the web of paper..most of forged and unreliable to administer.
We need a new flag..”we pledge allegiance the banana Republic...” A new flag with a big banana overlaid over it..
Your comment should be to sofaman.
Thanks!

This article is about the bill passed in 2006.
It’s possible that some of the same provisions remain; I have read that the Dream Act does. We will have to wait until we have the text to be sure.
Thanks for the heads-up.
