Amnesty & Citizenship The US Senate lurches towards immigration disaster

At this writing, various liberal US Senators like Ted Kennedy (D-Mass), along with a number of normally conservative Republicans have breathlessly announced a "compromise" on an immigration bill. President Bush has indicated strongly he supports the proposal and is ready to sign it as soon as possible.

I am very strongly opposed to the ideas being batted around in Washington for the following reasons:

1. I do not trust the federal government to enforce border security in the future. Pervious efforts have been a miserable failure due to a total lack of effort on the part of the President of the United States. Not only has he only given lip service to protecting the border, but the Border Patrol has been hamstrung in their efforts to control the flow of drugs and aliens across the entire length of the US-Mexico international boundary.

2. There can be no path to amnesty or citizenship for those here illegally. The message that will result from this bill is that if enough people break the law at one time, we will eliminate the law being broken.

3. There can be no path to amnesty or citizenship to those here who could pay the proposed fines, just because they happen to have enough money to buy their way into this country. If that idea is approved, we should offer to open our prison doors to anyone who could buy their way out of prison for any other offense. Why limit the buy-out option just to immigration lawbreakers?

4. Using history as an example, I foresee even more illegal immigrants coming to this country once this "deal" is struck. Ronald Reagan completed immigration reform in the mid 1980s when there were approximately 3 million illegals here. Bill Clinton did the same thing in the mid 90s. Now this. Every time we have had so called immigration reform, millions more have come across as a result of seeing that they too will eventually become legal in this country.

5. The costs of illegal employment have devastated the wages of low-income workers in our nation. Legalizing illegal activity will not work towards lowering taxes or raising those wages. Legalizing illegal aliens will only serve to multiply the taxpayer benefits paid to those who have broken American laws to take American jobs. According to expert testimony from a preliminary study given May 17 to the House Judiciary Committee by Robert Rector of the highly respected Heritage Foundation, the cost of amnesty and earned citizenship for just 7.9 million amnesty recipients would be $2.4 trillion. A cost that must be born by the American taxpayer.

6. I oppose the entire concept of the proposed "Z VISA" and any “touchback” provision. Touchback provisions are thinly veiled attempts to put illegal aliens at the front of the very long line of potential immigrants who are not allowed to live and work in the U.S. while pursuing legal residency.

(I heartily agree with Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions in his observation that any “grand compromise” legislation will be lengthy and will require considerable inspection before any responsible vote could be taken.)

7. With the track record of illegal aliens, I believe that millions of Mexicans IN MEXICO will soon be creating bogus documents to show they were here before 1 Jan.

8. I support the never - tried concept of attrition of the illegal population by enthusiastic enforcement of existing laws coupled with a verifiable, secure and tamper-proof worker verification ID for all applicants for U.S. jobs coupled with vigorous work-place and border enforcement. Attrition through enforcement is the only sensible, just and moderate method in taking the first steps to a real solution to the chaos created by the lack of action in the federal government’s obligation in securing America in a war on terror.

As a member of the Georgia State Senate, I strongly urge the U.S. Congress to heed the findings and recommendations of the Jordan Commission on Immigration Reform of 1995 and restate the words and spirit of the testimony of Barbara Jordan - that commission’s Chair - to Congress during the Clinton Administration: "Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave -- deportation is crucial. Employer sanctions can work.”

US Senators and Representatives: Listen to the voices from home. Do not rush into this legislation without a full knowledge and understanding of the devastating impact it will have on our country.

This came in my email last night. A well written, logical demolition of the so called "compromise" immigration measure. Stunningly, both of Georgia's normally very conservative US Senators seem to be in bed with Ted Kennedy on this. One, Sen Saxby Chambliss is up for re election in 2008. The other, Sen Johnny Isakson seems to want to run for Governor in 2010. My message to them: both hang in the balance over this issue and vote.

Did you notice that Senator Ted Kennedy invited radical organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Council of La Raza to help him craft so-called “immigration legislation” but called the 70% of the American people that oppose Amnesty “bigots” and told them to basically “shut up!” To put it in Kennedy’s own words: “We hope that the voices of hatred and bigotry will silence themselves for this debate...”

I wish democrat blue collar workers would come to their senses. Forget the Republican nuts supporting this bill, what are these people doing supporting democrats who constantly sell them out for the benefit of "the peoples of the world" or whatever garbage they're shovelling?

The Republican party is collapsing, but the Democrat party should just rename itself the UN party.

Ronald Reagan used to say he didnt leave the Democratic Party, it left him. I think we can substitute “Republican” now where “Democratic” used to be.

In other words the invitation has been extended to the Hispanic nations, ‘come on in, but hurry’.

Pending immigration legislation is not an immigration disaster. It is a national security disaster. Not since the rise and spread of communism and fascism has the modern world seen a threat as it is now faces with radical, jihadist Islam. Its most widely used tactic is social infiltration and we are opening the floodgates to hell.

I just can’t figure it out, except that the RNC has been drifting leftward for about a decade. Where are our “conservative” Republican senators?

Get their attention, they thrive on respect given to them, elected officials I speak of, write them or Email them and call them by their first name, not Sen so and so, etc.

So what? I am so sick of you people who oppose national IDs. If we had these from the gitgo, it would have been so much easier to enforce our immigration laws starting in the 1970s. As a result, we wouldn’t be in the sad sack state we are now. Get it though your head the Government KNOWS who you are. The real problem is that it doesn’t know (or want to know) who the illegals are.

I promise not to vote again if this gets passed.

I have voted in every election for the last 29 years.

This will signal the end of the two party system, and the start of full blown Socialism. D-rats will own the Federal government, crushing free enterprise.

This will mean every man for himself, and learn to game the system to survive.

Dear Mr. Bush, the buck stops here on this one.

If Illegal Aliens are simply Undocumented Immigrants who must be rewarded with citizenship, will these congress critters regard Illegal Drug Dealers as Unlicensed Pharmacists whom we must reward with a Long’s Drug Store franchise.

“The costs of illegal employment have devastated the wages of low-income workers in our nation.”

On Mark Levin’s radio show on Thursday Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation estimated that the net cost per illegal (paid in minus take out) was -$18,000 per year since approximately 60% of the illegals are high school dropouts and would have very little if any tax liability. He observed that if we had 12 million American high school dropouts suddenly appear in this country we’d call it a big problem and would look for ways of fixing it. With this bill we’re importing the problem from a corrupt, poorly managed country and the big costs are going to hit us at about the same time that the bulk of baby boomers are looking to retire.

A fantasy fall back position might be that based on the Senate vote only those states whose senators voted FOR this amnesty would get the 12-30 million illegals. It might look like this:
For purposes of discussion let’s assume 12 million illegals (My guess is that the actual number is double that.) and there turns out to be 60 votes for the Bill in the Senate.
That’s 200,000 illegals per Senate vote. If both your Senators vote for the Bill you get 400,000 spanking new citizens (and press 2 for English). If one of your Senators votes for the Bill you get “only” 200,000. If both your Senators oppose the bill you get zip, zero, nada. I suggest the same approach for the increased annual numbers, chain migration numbers etc. For those who love to use what I consider to be a detestable expression I’ll throw it back to them, “Elections do have consequences”. Senatorial elections, too.

The other thing I’d like to see from our elected officials is that anyone supporting this bill has to give up taxpayer paid Secret Service protection including Jorge.

This fantasy proposal would sure make it easier to determine where you want to live.

Amendment X. Fedgov isn’t allowed to do this under the Constitution. Get THAT through YOUR head.

Amendment X. Fedgov isn’t allowed to do this under the Constitution

Really? Well here is Ammendment 10: Powers of the States and People. Ratified 12/15/1791.

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

This ammendment simply deals with the fact that power resides with the people and not with the Government. Issuing national IDs to people DOES NOGT take any freedoms away from citizens—rather, it just makes sure we know who citizens are. The Feds know this anyway through a hodgepode of different methods—but standardization is sorely needed. Indeed, if the Federal Government could not issue national IDs, there would be no such thing as military IDs, passports, social security numbers, etc. I’d wager that your one of those guys who doesn’t pay income taxes either because of imaginary ammendments that prohibit it. Frankly, you need to be more flexible, pragmatic, and (dare I say) intelligent—especially since our soverignty is being threatened.

Again and again.

They all make me sick. Savage is right - they are SCUM.

How much are you wagering? I’ll be glad to take your money on that bet.

You’re wrong, but since you’re a statist, you won’t recognize it.

The Constitution does not confer the power to ID citizens. If you think it does then quote the section or amendment.
