Bush Removes Provision Requiring Back taxes From Illegal Immigrants
Boston Globe ^ | May 19, 2007 | Michael Kranish

Posted on 05/19/2007 3:54:46 AM PDT by Jim Noble

The Bush administration insisted on a little-noticed change in the bipartisan Senate immigration bill that would enable 12 million undocumented residents to avoid paying back taxes or associated fines to the Internal Revenue Service, officials said.

An independent analyst estimated the decision could cost the IRS tens of billions of dollars.

A provision requiring payment of back taxes had been in the initial version of a bill proposed by Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat. But the administration called for the provision to be removed due to concern that it would be too difficult to figure out which illegal immigrants owed back taxes...

"It is important that the reformed immigration system is workable and cost efficient," Stanzel said. "Determining the past tax liability would have been very difficult and costly and extremely time consuming."...

Laura Capps, a spokeswoman for Kennedy, said a provision for requiring back taxes was in Kennedy's original bill and that Chertoff called for it to be removed. "Chertoff thought it would be too challenging to accurately determine the amount of an applicant's back taxes," she said.

Administration officials said many illegal immigrants do not get paychecks that can be audited, making it difficult to determine tax liability.

So you've actually read all 700+ pages of the bill then?

This fact came from the same source where all his other facts come from.

Johnnies feverishly searching the Web for a source to back up his or her claim, all the while seething over comments toward a President gone bad.

Shhh ... don't tell Johnnie that the final bill is still being drafted. He could be tied up all day trying to find it and won't be making his slew of uninformed, annoying posts.

So in other words he made it up.

I suspected as much.

Thanks DB.

So tell me what the party is doing that is viable now. We have an amnesty shill as head of the RNC.

Look, we have to get nasty! We protest, write emails, phone calls, picket, boycott anything and everything to get this parties attention! Conservatives don't live and die by getting elected to power like dems do. So this little stunt done by dopes to teach republicans a lesson by not voting for them was useless and boneheaded. The message obviously did not get thru to republicans because they don't view serving their constituents as a religion and don't care about political power. Right now there is no "viability" in the republican party because moderates have taken over, headed by Bush apperently!

We have too fight these moderates and kick their asses, not run from them like whimps! Moderate hold NO useful idea or stances. If we would just stand, we end up slaughtering them!

BS. This is just more of the nonsense made up BS from the rabid Bush haters. The provision for back taxes is IN the bill. This bill is a terrible and should be defeated but the rabid Bush haters do NOT help matters when they manufacture LIES about the bill.

I have a feeling you don't really believe the part about "This bill is a terrible and should be defeated..." If you did, it wouldn't be followed by a "...but..." There IS no BUT about it. It's blatantly terrible and even non-rabid Bush haters can agree that he is not only ignoring the will of the people, he is proud of it.

I guess I'll put myself on the list of those who have questioned you and not yet received an answer: Have you seen the bill? If not, how do you know what is or isn't in it?

Chertoff called for it to be removed. “Chertoff thought it would be too challenging to accurately determine the amount of an applicant’s back taxes,” she said.

I have a very simple question. Why is the Director of Homeland Security focussing on taxes?

He should have one concern and one concern only - Does this bill make our Homeland more secure? Let other bureaucrats e.g. Secretary of the Treasury address financial and tax concerns.

Interesting. Reminds me of the "fine Senator from New York" when she said
"Many of you are well enough off that the tax cuts may have helped you. We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."

The American people get their tax cuts taken away because THEY are going to give them to the 'common good' i.e., the USA usurpers, illegal 'immigrants'.

Does anyone know where we can get the actual text of the proposal? Note that it is not even a bill yet. The Senate will amend the crap out of it before it ever gets voted on. But what is the explicit text in the proposal?

This moment, we don’t even know if there is amnesty in it. All we seem to know is that lots of pundits say there is amnesty in it. Where is the text itself?

Isn't that what the IRS is for?

If there is one thing that conservatives have done in the last decade it is to put the IRS in a box, and having the IRS try to collect back taxes for this fiasco will be the IRS reconstitution bonanza of the millenium. Who are they going to go after - workers or employers, who at this point is probably most of the rest of us. All you will do is legalize the illegals you will now make outlaws of the citizenry.

And why do you want the feral gubmint to get more money anyway. I want as few people paying as little tax as possible because each extra dollar hires an extra bureaucrat to make my life hell.

Just wait until amnesty allows all those formerly illegals to bring their parents - who will then suck up the pathetic little that remains of our social security.

I’m 60 - I do not expect to see anything of the money they have taken from me since I was 16 (and that was a long long time ago!)

But I bet those amnesty-awarded aliens’ parents will get some of it!

Done deal.

By early Thursday afternoon, McCain joined nine other senators and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez at a Capitol press conference announcing the deal. After making a few comments, McCain left the Capitol to head to New York for presidential campaign events. Later that day, McCain missed his 43rd straight vote, this on the $2.9 trillion budget outline.

I'm counting on the real Americans in Congress (and the American people) to stop any further discussion of passing this Bill until they can go over it "word by word".

Eagles up!

“Or do you envision putting 20 million people on railroad boxcars bound for the Mexican border?”

Not at all. They should be retunred to Mexico City, via airplane.

Too hard to determine tax liability?
This is unbelievable. Simply shocking.

What the HELL is going on?!

I’d be better off being illegal. I think it would behoove me to change my name (I am fluent enough in Spanish), make up a SSN, and then never pay taxes. I could keep my real jobs and earn some extra cash tax free - it would be “too difficult to determine my tax liability”.

Another reason to never, ever, being filing. Once you file, they’ve got you by the balls. If you’ve ever reported, don’t stop. But if you’ve never started, hey man - it would be too hard to determine your tax liability!

I think LEGAL CITIZENS such as you wife, who did it the right way, should be the angriest of all. What is the point of having an immigration system when some must follow the correct path and others get a pass because they didn't?

I can no longer support this President.
