Quisling exhibit stirs controversy (Norway)

The museum for Telemark County has devoted a new exhibit to one of its most infamous natives, national traitor Vidkun Quisling. It's not being entirely well-received.

"I don't quite see the exhibit's point," one of the Telemark Museum's own board members, Arnulf Rafgård, told newspaper Aftenposten. He thinks the exhibit has an unnatural personal focus, and that it's not critical enough about Quisling himself.

Quisling, born in Fyresdal in Telemark in 1887, once carried out humanitarian work for Fridtjof Nansen's organization in Russia, but went on to form Norway's nationalist party (NS) in 1933. He met Adolph Hitler in 1939 and was eventually tapped by the Nazis to lead the country's puppet government after the German invasion of 1940.

His betrayal of fellow Norwegians was so profound that his very name became an international synonym for traitor. The much-hated Quisling surrendered after Norway's liberation in May 1945, and was executed five months later.

Hilde Fiskum, project leader behind the exhibit, claims the exhibit has received good reviews and that it doesn't overlook Quisling's victims. "We present many of those who were sentenced to death by Quisling, along with the deportation of Jews and arrests of teachers," Fiskum told Aftenposten.

Museum officials started discussing a Quisling exhibit back in 1999, and knew it would be controversial. It features information about different phases of Quisling's life, displays of his personal belongings and films in which he took part. "One of the points with this exhibit is to portray the man Vidkun Quisling, not just his well-known negative side," Fiskum said.

Gunnar Sønsteby, the Norwegian resistance hero who long was on Quisling's "most wanted" list, intends to see the exhibit. Sønsteby, who was charged with guarding Quisling when he was in post-war custody, said he thinks the topic is interesting and important, as does Odd-Bjørn Fure, leader of Oslo's new Holocaust Center.

"It's entirely legitimate and historically interesting," he said. "An exhibit about Quisling is a good idea."

His treason should never be forgot. He was both mad and smart, as he was the best student the war academy had ever had.

That statement doesn't make any sense. Sounds like one of our dem politicians talking.

The worst traitor is the one who wears a friendly face and then slowly does you in - for your own good, of course.

It has had at least one positive affect, it has just taught me about another bad guy from WWII. I don't remember ever learning about Quisling, and if I had, I'd forgotten long ago.

It's important to remember the bad guys too, even details about their personal lives. If you don't know your enemy, how can you defeat them?

Museums teach history like no book ever can. I remember the Kon-Tiki and Viking Ship museums well. They got me to read Thor Heyerdahl's books and get interested in the Vikings. Taught me my red hair probably has Viking origins. The Berserker in me definitely does.

Vidkun Quisling was a brilliant man, but a traitor. His name became a byword for treason around the world. There was a joke going on in Germany that he met Hitler and said, “I’m Quisling.” Hitler said, “That’s good. What’s your name?”

The Benedict Arnold of Norway, only Quisling’s betrayal was on a much larger scale.
