No, not perfect. But any candidate would be ecstatic over a 92 lifetime rating from the ACU.

Things have changed since 9/11 for all of us.

He [Thompson] is too slow and deliberate. He also represents the status quo. We need some fresh ideas in DC, not a rehash of the same old players.

Thompson is McCain-light.

He helped write the Campaign Finance Reform bill. His bots try to explain around that. Yet, all he as said is 'it didn't work quite the way we planned'.

I like Duncan Hunter. He was very impressive in the debate Tuesday, but can he get the votes to lead the pack? I doubt it.

True. It probably made him realize what an albatross McCain Feingold was, which he supported. LOL

“Thompson is savvy enough to know that the grassroots will not tolerate Amnesty”

I am fond of Thompson, but his initial response on illegals
reminded me of Maggie Thatcher to Bush “Don’t go wobbly, George”

Thanks, I had no idea he helped write the campaign finance bill. You are right, I think he is McCain-light.

I know. Lotsa folks like Hunter, but the “can he win” thing is holding them back. To our good fortune, Hunter is in it to win, and so are his supporters. No illusions though, it’s gonna take alot of blood, sweat and beers.

This focus on illegal immigration won’t hurt his ascendancy.

It was weaker than Romney’s response, though for Mitt, this is another “road to Des Moines” conversion.

Don't get me wrong, I love Hunter and will crawl through lava to vote for him if he's nominated. But FReeper pissant wants to criticize Thompson's record and naively believe that Hunter is pure as the driven snow.

Hunter is a career Congressman who has been through all the debates about SS/Medicare/Medicaid and other big government programs and has done little to stop it. Limiting the size of government, taxes, and spending is a HUGE priority for me, which was why I was an early Giuliani supporter until his liberalism on social issues became too much to bear.

Federal government has no business being involved in education -- Hunter's voting for NCLB and Part D is typical modern-day Republicanism, trying make a government program work more efficient instead of just killing it outright and letting the free market work its magic so the Left won't call them names. I'd have more respect for Hunter if he ran for CA Governor in 1998 or even President in 2000. At best he's running for VP or Secretary of Defense.

“road to Des Moines”

That was hilarious. Truely classic quote! Evening.

Romney is building an unbelievable national organization. The second tier aren’t and it is one reasons they are second tier.

Hunter is excellent on the illegal immigration issue....thank god. The problem is, there are other issues. Romney seems to handle all the issues well.

I would have no problem voting for Thompson, but Hunter would be better, IMO.

Both men have their individual problems, but they are minimal compared to the other candidates.

Nobody is pure as the driven snow. Hell, my hero Reagan had his share of dumb things both as Prez and governor. But it is the overall tenor and direction and history that makes Hunter my (and many others here) #1, by a long shot.

For the sake of argument, I will concede he has a “C” in spending over his career (though historically he has been very tough on spending).

Temper that with an:

A+ on tax cuts
A+ on military expertise
A+ on pro life issues
A+ on fighting the gay agenda
A+ on anti-communism (china)
A+ on the 2A
A+ on smashmouthing libs (including the ACLU) while others cowered
A+ on illegal immigration
A+ on anti gay agenda
A+ Hate crimes legislation
A- on energy
A+ in supporting Bush in Iraq
A in supporting Israel

Not just lately, mind you but for 26 years. All that siad, I would not cry if another conservative gets the nod, including Thompson.

I personally think Thompson is a lot more than McCain-Lite. He’s capable of being inspiring and extremely likeable. And I think more consistently conservative.

That said, you’re right: the criticism against him is that he really hasn’t made his views on issues made known. For instance, Thompson on illegal immigration:

There’s just not that much meat to it. Frank talk, but no real solutions. One thing I like about Romney (who I support) and Hunter (who I like a lot) is that they have very thoroughly articulated solutions to problems and have even been innovative.

Then again, Thompson is a catchy, folksy speaker:

I’m not so sure his style lends itself to debates, however...
