Officials evacuate village as explosive ordnance disposal technicians make area safe.
By Senior Airman Dilia DeGrego Combined Joint Task Force-82 Public Affairs Office CARZAY, Afghanistan, May 17, 2007 Afghan National Police and Coalition forces successfully disarmed a 1,200-pound Soviet-era bomb May 15 in the village of Carzay, Kohistan II district, Kapisa province.
"The fact that ANP (Afghan National Police) and Coalition forces conducted this as a combined operation demonstrates to the local people that the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is committed to providing them with safety and security."
Army Maj. Mark Holler, Task Force Cincinnatus operations officer
The bomb lay untouched for more than 25 years until villagers informed the district chief of its existence.
Everyone else knew it was here, said Sindiqi Hamayoun, owner of the home nearest to the bomb. However, I did not know the bomb was here when I started building my home two years ago, until a relative told me. When they (ANP and Coalition forces) came around asking if we had seen any bombs, I showed them where it was.
Due to the bombs potential blast radius, villagers were evacuated while explosive ordnance disposal technicians from Bagram Airfield attempted to diffuse the bomb. Afghan National Police officers worked with Coalition forces to establish a large cordon, maintain security and hand out humanitarian aid to villagers while EOD rendered safe the bomb.
The fact that ANP and Coalition forces conducted this as a combined operation demonstrates to the local people that the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is committed to providing them with safety and security, said Army Maj. Mark Holler, Task Force Cincinnatus operations officer.
Kohistan district Afghan National Police Chief, Mohamad Naeem Secandari, agreed, It is very good to work with the Americans to secure the people. We dont have all of the resources, but we can work together to secure the people. We also learn from their experience.
Following the disarming, explosive ordnance disposal technicians safely removed the unarmed bomb from the village and villagers were allowed to return to their homes.
I am happy to have them (ANP and Coalition forces) here, added Hamayoun. They make the people safe. Thank you. They can come back anytime.
Does the bomb evaporate or sublime as it diffuses? I certainly hope the diffusion velocity of the bomb particles is not too high or the bomb might go off.
I got an e-mail from my friend’s daughter this morning, who is stationed at Bagram. She just so happened to be along on this operation. Her part in this was coordinating the evacuation and also making sure that the children were kept entertained with new school supplies, toys, puzzles and Afghan flags.
She just made SGT and re-enlisted!!!
Got me I’m not EOD
Is the bomb diffuse yet?
Good for Her. Congratulations SGT!
For all intensive purposes, it’s hard to diffuse a bomb.
She’s looking forward to an upcoming leave. She especially is expecting me to take her to the local range, where she is going to show me how to shoot my Glock.......
;-)
That so cool I have feeling Russians left some stuff in Aghtaraion they were outta there really quick LOL!
I think they left off a “d” at the end. QA needs some help there.
One defuses a bomb.
By contrast, a gas is diffused into the atmosphere.
LOL!
The wrong word was used. “Defuse” means to remove the fuse (from an explosive device). “Diffuse” means “widely spread or scattered”, as in a diffuse substance such as a gas.
Trainin fromthe Best.
My source tells me that the UXO was “disposed” of, safely.
I’m afraid I’m gonna get my ass kicked.....
Just Listen to what the SGT says and you’ll be OK.
