One thing wrong with Debbie's article:

An "acute abdomen" is NOT easy to treat. By definition, it is a condition that requires EMERGENCY exploratory SURGERY to see what is causing the symptoms and to correct the situation if possible. The outcome depends on the underlying cause of the symptoms. Of course, the last thing you would want to do is leave the patient waiting in the ER without attention. He should have been whisked to the operating room for the surgeons to work on him.

In this case, we don't know from the info given what his chances of survival would have been, had he been treated properly. But we do know that they'd be better than they actually were when some folks apparently forgot about him in the ER.
