{ Specter } GOP Senator Predicts Gonzales Will Quit

WASHINGTON, (AP) -- The top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee predicted Thursday that the probe of firings of federal prosecutors would lead to the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The Justice Department, according to veteran Sen. Arlen Specter, can't properly protect the nation from terrorism or oversee President Bush's no-warrant eavesdropping program with Gonzales at the helm.

"I have a sense that when we finish our investigation, we may have the conclusion of the tenure of the attorney general," Specter, R-Pa., said during a committee hearing. "I think when our investigation is concluded, it'll be clear even to the attorney general and the president that we're looking at a dysfunctional department which is vital to the national welfare."

His comment echoed new criticism of the attorney general this week. Former deputy attorney general James Comey testified that Gonzales tried to get his predecessor as attorney general, John Ashcroft, to approve Bush's eavesdropping program as Ashcroft lay in intensive care.

The tale inspired Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., to become the fourth Republican senator to call for Gonzales' resignation. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., joined in the criticism.

"When you have to spend more time up here on Capitol Hill instead of running the Justice Department, maybe you ought to think about it," Roberts told The Associated Press.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, who has not called for Gonzales' resignation, agreed.

"I have absolutely no confidence in the attorney general or his leadership," said Leahy, D-Vt.

Does Specter ever NOT side with Democrats? The man is a disgrace. I would prefer this seat go to Democrat if necessary to get rid of this guy.

Same here. That said, he made a big political mistake supporting Arlen Spector, and this is exactly why conservatives wanted Toomey to replace him in the GOP primaries.

With ‘friends like these....’

Ah yes...one of the worst mistakes W ever made was saving Sphincter’s...seat. That insufferable ingrate has not stopped stabbing the President in the back since he headed the Judicial Com. and continues to act like the RINO he is, exactly as conservatives said he would. Some people are not very good at judging character.

Specter? If this tidbit came from a real GOP Senator I’d think it was meaningful. Not a faux-Republican like Specter.

‘Some people are not very good at judging character.’

They never considered ‘character’ they just considered keeping the Senate majority. And thats why they lost control of both the House and Senate in the end.

He should quit or be fired but not because of the firings.

He’s worthless... He let us down on homeland security abuse.

Now that's FUNNY!

And whose fault is that? I hope that isn't the rule we use now, or the democrats will call all the administration officials every week to testify.

I have been reserving judgment but something I found out today made me seriously question the guy. He apparently browbeat Ashcroft when he was ill, during a bedside visit. I must admit something here and now. I really liked Ashcroft and was very sad to see him go. I’m sorry, but I have to refer back to my original reservations about Gonzo .... he’s nowhere near Ashcroft in terms of capability and core values.

Can we get Gonzales to spill the beans on Specter first?

There's gotta' be something on the guy, or he's just plain stupid.

Ashcroft isn't sick now so it must not have been a serious browbeating.

Besides, concern over such matters is irrelevant. Gonzo's Democrat critics and their running dog lackeys are far more dangerous than he is.

Under ordinary circumstances I'd like to see Gonzo made subject to a visa review or something.

Words to remember:

"Brownie, you doing a heckuva job!"
"Harriet Myers is my choice for the Supreme Court!"
"Don Rumsfeld has my full faith and confidence!"
"Mission Accomplished!"
"I believe Putin to be for full democracy in Russia"
"I don't think we need any more troops in Iraq (March 2006)."
"Our ports will be adequately protected by the Dubai firm."
"The attorney general has my full support"
...and "We took a thumpin!"

That hospital room visit story turned my stomach, and had I been the doc on duty I would have thrown them out, pronto. Aschcroft had gallstone pancreatitis, which is not a trivial problem. It was severe enough to put him in the ICU, and some people do die from it. The fact that Attorney General Ashcroft has now recovered doesn’t speak at all to how sick he was then - I know you understand logic better than that.

Also, pancreatitis often causes severe pain, and requires strong narcotic pain mediciation. He was quite right to hand over the role to someone else in that circumstance. Whether his designee made good decisions or not is a reasonable question, but bothering someone in the ICU for something like this is disgusting.
