Happy Birthday to the Washington Times
The Washington Times - Politics Blog ^ | 15 May 2007 | Robert Stacy McCain, assistant national editor, The Washington Times

Posted on 05/17/2007 5:10:32 AM PDT by COBOL2Java

The Washington Times will publicly celebrate its 25th anniversary at a gala event Thursday, but today the newspaper held a “family” celebration for its employees, with presentations by editor-in-chief Wesley Pruden and others.

Today’s event featured an excellent new short film history of the newspaper that emphasized the values of freedom, family, faith and service that are being commemorated this week on the Culture Etc. page with profiles of the recipients of the Founding Spirit Awards.

At today’s event, Tom McDevitt, president of The Times, did the math and reported that “America’s Newspaper” has now been in business for 13 million minutes. Since 1982, The Times has become “a patriotic destination” for the nation’s readers, a newspaper that is “truly unique.”

Mr. McDevitt said that while “outmanned and outgunned” by larger news operations, The Times has succeeded because “hard work has made us who we are.”

Mr. McDevitt talked about the intense loyalty of the newspaper’s readers, and remarked that online readers in particular are “passionate” about The Times. And he mentioned that he recently spoke to the newspaper’s founder, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, who had just flown into Washington’s Reagan National Airport.

As the plane approached Washington, Mr. McDevitt said, the Rev. Moon looked down and noticed Arlington National Cemetery below, and was moved to reflect that “so many people gave their lives” to make America the great nation that it is.

And a great nation deserves a great newspaper.

I’ve been a 7-day week mail subscriber for several years—what a fabulous newspaper! All real news except for 4 pages of op-Ed where every diverse opinion is given; terrific foreign coverage, great family colums, truly breaking news, Wesley Pruden’s weekly take-no-prisoners column—just for starters. Religious (gasp) banners on Easter and Christmas; patriotic editorials on July 4, Memorial Day; Christmas gospels on the Editorial page.

The Washington Times is a real treasure. More can be learned in six months’ reading of the Times than a full year in college. And useful knowledge to boot! Still only $.25 on the newsstand but we gladly pay extra.

Fine. Throw your money to Pinch Sulzberger.
He’s a cultist too.
Maybe not a Moonie - just a MOONBAT!
AND I suppose Rupert Murdoch is a saint.

Sadly, enough people feel like you do to dilute the effectiveness of the paper. But then again, they also disparage Fox News, Wall Street Journal - in short, ANYTHING that covers the conservative viewpoint at all.

I like the WashTimes, and don’t care about the Moon angle.
Maybe I would if I had your personal experience, but I don’t.

I’m sorry about your experience with Moon... I’m sure your hatred of him is justified.

Nevertheless, the Washington Times is the best newspaper in the country, and I will continue to support it and read it, and recognize it as the great publication it is.
