S.C. Considers Allowing Guns on Campuses

Columbia, S.C. (AP) -- To prevent school shootings, some South Carolina legislators want more guns on campuses.

A House subcommittee approved a measure Wednesday that would allow concealed weapon permit holders to carry guns onto public school campuses, from elementary schools to universities. Supporters say having trained and armed gun owners in schools could prevent massacres like the April 16 shootings at Virginia Tech, where one armed student killed 32 people.

Only Utah currently has a law allowing concealed weapons on campuses.

"We're not talking about kids. We're talking about responsible adults," said Republican Rep. Jeff Duncan, who sponsored the bill.

Opponents fear more guns will mean more accidental shootings, and questioned if colleges were an appropriate environment for guns.

"I'm concerned about more guns around younger people combined with emotions and sometimes alcohol," said Rep. Doug Jennings, a Democrat. "I don't think it's a proper reaction to the Virginia Tech tragedy."

It’s impossible for one person to shoot 50 people with a pistol if just one of the 50 is shooting back.

RTC South Carolina Bump! I've said it before: if kids are old enough to fight asnd die for our country, they should be allowed to defend themselves on campus... or anywhere else for that matter.

What's this age bigotry from Democrat Doug Jennings? 18 year old soldiers can carry lethal weapons and college kids can't? The problem is victim massacre zones created by liberals not our kids.

I scratched SC off as a state to move too because...

There’s still a ban on firearms in churches.

And most malls are off-limits for firearm carrying.

Please correct me if the laws have changed.

Yeah... liberals have come up with these anecdotal horror stories about RTC that has NO basis in fact. Kids can carry in Utah and last I heard, Utah's campuses aren't shooting galleries.

Even in the worst case scenario, the result of this can’t be nearly as bad as the result of the current policies.

In Oregon if you have a CCL you can carry every place except a court room, an airport loading area or a Federal building.

Only Utah currently has a law allowing concealed weapons on campuses.

That statement is incorrect. In Kentucky, the law leaves it entirely up to the administration at the university. I know there are other states that are similar.

Can you get CCL in Oregon if you aren’t a resident? (We live in Washington, the State.)

Silly FReeper...

18-20 year olds are to be used as the state sees fit.

Vote for poiticians? (usually D's) - OK

Serve in the military? No problem.

Have a beer? No way. Too immature!

Buy/carry a handgun? Are you flippin' kidding me?

The only reason that 18 year olds don't riot over their obvious treatment as second-class citizens is that they're too busy getting laid.

"...College police chiefs across South Carolina said allowing guns on campuses would make it difficult to pinpoint a criminal. "Today, if we respond, we know the person with the weapon is the bad guy," said Ernest Ellis, the law enforcement director at the University of South Carolina..."

Soooo.... the current policy is to "smoke" anybody with a weapon? Gotta make it pretty tough for undercover/off duty LEO's. Guess the off duty LEO that pinned down that mall shooter a while ago was just lucky he didn't get "lit up".

Like the police had ever had problems with RTC permit holders. Its a red herring.
