More Parents Opt for Homeschooling
Lawrence Journal-World ^ | May 13, 2007 | Mindie Paget & Terry Rombeck

Barbara Ballard realizes it’s a bold move.

Her daughter, Katie, is 4. The state says she should start kindergarten in the fall.

But Katie won’t be boarding a school bus and making macaroni art projects with 25 other children. Instead, she’ll have “school” by herself at her mother’s office in southern Lawrence, where Ballard owns a technology company.

Ballard plans to home school her daughter, and in doing so joins a growing number of families who choose not to send their children to public or private schools.

“It’s a strong statement: I don’t think the professionals can do as good a job educating my child as I can,” Ballard says.

More parents are agreeing with that assessment, according to government figures and groups that advocate home education.

They are, unfortunately, also typical. Several of the posters seemed to not even understand how intolerant they were being in the name of tolerance (i.e.: allowing schools to indoctrinate children because parents shouldn’t “shield” their children).

Anyone who doesn't blindly accept liberal dogma is "close-minded," according to them. They are incapable of recognizing their own bigotry.

Is it just me or is a four year-old too young to be surrendered up to the state? My son didn’t ‘do’ kindergarten back in the old days, and he’s a corporate accountant today.

In many places, they're pushing for pre-pre-pre-K at 3 years old. The state uber alles appears to be their motto.

I personally know of at least 2 second-generation homeschool families myself.

I think kids who get kicked out of schools after schools end up homeschooling because they have no alternative.

I don't know of any homeschool families who homeschool "because they have no alternative". Kids who get kicked out, from what I have read, are inevitably offered a state-run alternative school or program.

Can you identify a case of this, or point to a published report?

Please note that I am not trying to be argumentative, although I have not seen a case of this amongst the score-plus homeschool families I know.

Back in my day, only the “dummies” went to kindergarten.

My husband’s brother homeschools his kids. We’ll homeschool once we have kids. Any of my six younger siblings who has kids will homeschool. It’s just the assumption in homeschooled families, I find.

What a lovely, optimistic and positive bit of news this is in a time of so many sinister negatives! Homeschooling has been the way to go for decades, and I, for one, am so pleased to see it expanding today. God bless these parents. May they be an inspiration to many others.

No problem - although a sarcasm tag might have helped.

Have a good day, FRiend.

Mark my words, in 20 years homeschool graduates will be running this country.

Because they'll be literate.

This is how *professionals* handled that lady’s harrasment:

Black, White of ‘ho’ Culture
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1834541/posts

“Nevertheless, despite frequent complaints, school officials did nothing to intervene on Kandrac’s behalf, arguing that the racially charged profanity was simply part of the students’ culture. If Kandrac couldn’t handle cursing, school officials told her, she was in the wrong school.”

Something no student or teacher in a homeschooling setting would have to endure or tolerate.

Well..the data in our district is different.
But that could be (I don’t know) because this is such a liberal area.
Many people I know who homeschool in my community would not be likely to send their child to a religious private school. And the secular ones (around here at least) are quite a bit more expensive.

I know a kid who was kicked out of public school and his *alternative* was JD. His mother homeschooled him and he really turned around.

The thing that made me want to cry was when he successfully spelled a big word and said to his mother, “See, I’m not stupid after all.” He was a teen.

That is why they should use vouchers because even relatively affluent people should get a break on private schools if they chose to send their kids to private schools. Same with Homeschoolers. I don’t know if it will ever come to fruition though.
