Derek Jackson, a Bailey Middle School student, was slapped with an in-school suspension because of his "buzz cut."
An assistant principal pulled Derek Jackson aside, after she saw his extremely short haircut. Both Derek and his mother say school told them the haircut violates the school's dress code. A copy of that dress code talks about disruptive hair color and shapes, like a mohawk, that violate the policy, but it makes no mention of hair length.
Derek's mother thinks he was targeted because he is African-American.
A friend of mine works at a Southern California public high school. They have a long, long list of rules that they send to parents, stuff (many seemingly innocent) that kids aren't allowed to wear because they are signs of being in a gang. These were just some of them:
Buttoning the top button of a shirt while leaving one of the lower buttons undone.
Skipping a belt loop.
Wearing a shirt with "Los Angeles" on it, (or any of a number of team names or logos.)
Wearing certain colors.
She went on and on and on...this is apparently a very long list which must be constantly updated and mailed out to parents. I wonder how much time, money, and effort is put into compiling and enforcing this kind of thing? And obviously the kids just keep changing their gang signs. It's ridiculous.
Don’t want to accuse anyone of anything false, but dang those women look rather...they are all women, right?
The freak show on 6th Street at night is something nobody should miss.
He looks clean and neat. I’d think the school would be thrilled.
In my home, it WAS the law.
I think Kamilya (Camillia) is a girl's name. In this case, it appears to be a Muslim name as well. (Al-Sharif Al-Sharif).
My thoughts, exactly... The kid looks nice, fer gossakes! The administrators, meanwhile, look as though they found their clothes out of a dumpster.
The one on our left looks like a younger Janet Reno.
Dingdingding! Winner winner!
Not to mention the administration’s apparent same-sex proclivities.
How much you want to bet he is also an excellent student.. he just doesn’t fit in with their image.. you know.. a Middle School that has an official ‘Sk8ter Club’... No Joke!

Suspending a kid for a buzz cut is pretty out there.
Stuff the school sponsors on campus.
My Theory:
The liberal schmuck administrator doesn’t like this kid’s haircut, because it looks ‘too military’.
Betcha betcha...
SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE HAIRSTYLE!
YOU'RE EXPELLED, MISTER!
I think the one on the right is a dude.
