Derek Jackson, a Bailey Middle School student, was slapped with an in-school suspension because of his "buzz cut."
An assistant principal pulled Derek Jackson aside, after she saw his extremely short haircut. Both Derek and his mother say school told them the haircut violates the school's dress code. A copy of that dress code talks about disruptive hair color and shapes, like a mohawk, that violate the policy, but it makes no mention of hair length.
Derek's mother thinks he was targeted because he is African-American.
The whole issue is bizarre. The young man looks nice. MANY young African-American young men in our area have such styles. I don’t get it.
Too bad the mother and her son cannot move out of that district.
The school is in Austin.
So he’s suspended (ie MISSING SCHOOL) until his hair grows back? I swear, the morons that are running some schools...
When I was his age, we HAD to have our heads cut that way!...........Bring back the “Flat Top”!........

What were his parents thinking? He needs to be placed into a government run foster care center run by Mrs. Elders.
If there is ONE WHITE KID at that school with a buzz haircut that did not get suspended there will be a big lawsuit.
That kid is Austin will be getting $400.00 haircuts everyday for the rest of his life.
Same here, when we starting wearing Beatles cuts in 1964, they raised cain about it, but they didn’t kick us out of school or make us cut it, and it wasn’t that long.
I’m wondering if the young man’s father is in the military and if said young man was in reality suspended for having, what looks like, a military-type hair cut.
I went through most of grade school with not much more than that. In the summer, that length was normal.
When I was young this time of year me and my brothers all got heinies for the summer.
Unless there are words, or a symbol shaved , I have no clue why this haircut is “disruptive”!

Yep! School’s out and off comes the hair!..............I thought it was a law or something!............
What would they do if the child came down with alopecia?
