Report: Limbaugh, Salem Targeted By House Democrats In Fairness Doctrine Push
All Access ^ | 5/15/07 | All Access

Are SALEM RADIO NETWORK and RUSH LIMBAUGH being targeted by Speaker of the House NANCY PELOSI and Reps. STENY HOYER (D-MD) and DENNIS KUCINICH (D-OH) as the three push the return of the Fairness Doctrine to the front burner?

"THE WASHINGTON PROWLER," a column in the AMERICAN SPECTATOR, reported in an online article today (5/14) that a PELOSI senior adviser told the magazine, "First, [Democrats] failed on the radio airwaves with AIR AMERICA, no one wanted to listen. Conservative radio is a huge threat and political advantage for Republicans and we have had to find a way to limit it. Second, it looks like the Republicans are going to have someone in the presidential race who has access to media in ways our folks don't want, so we want to make sure the GOP has no advantages going into 2008."

The "PROWLER" suggests that the last comment is a reference to former Sen. FRED THOMPSON, an ABC NEWS RADIO commentator and actor.

The magazine says that PELOSI is planning to take aim at several targets in the fight, including LIMBAUGH and SALEM, and that KUCINICH's staff is investigating SALEM, with a Government Reform committee staffer saying, "They are identifying senior employees, their political activities and their political giving. SALEM is a big target, but the big one is going to be LIMBAUGH. We know we can't shut him up, but we want to make life a bit more difficult for him."

On his show MONDAY, LIMBAUGH devoted much of the first hour to the article and the Fairness Doctrine threat.

What's next, vegetarians being forced by the govt to eat meat? Atheists being forced to attend church--or religious people being forced NOT to?

btw Salem is a religious broadcasting company that also has stations running political talk: Michael Medved, Dennis
Praeger, Hugh Hewitt, etc. Some Salem-owned stations run
the likes of Ingraham, Hannity, or Dennis Miller.
(Example: Boston’s Conservative Talk

To me this is a great sign.

They are trying to attack the first amendment because their beliefs are so radical and/or poor they cannot weather criticism.

Air America failed in Boston (went off in Dec.) and a group has so far been unsuccessful in an attempt to bring it back.
From that group’s Yahoo group:
“House democrats are bringing the Fairness doctrine back to the front burner.
That would be absolutely wonderful if the Fairness doctrine is re-instated.”

This is so scary. Congress passing laws to limit dissent.

McCain Feingold paved the way. The founding founders would cry if they could see the way our first amendment freedoms are being attacked by those who claim to be american patriots.

This staffer hasn't memorized his talking points. He's not supposed to reveal that this is simply a Democrat effort to silence conservative talk radio.

Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) says that a study titled “The Fox News Effect: Media Bias and Voting,” by Steano Della Vigna of the University of California at Berkeley and Ethan Kaplan, of Stockholm University, supports his contention that legislation is needed to “level the playing field of American politics.”

The study asserts that the Fox News network influenced enough voters in to the 2000 presidential race to throw the election to Bush. According to the study, the vote shift from Gore to Bush due to Fox News was 10,757 votes in Florida. This was larger than Bush’s 537 vote margin of victory.

“We cannot allow biased reporting of the news to decide the outcome of elections,” Kucinich said. “We have to restore the ‘Fairness Doctrine’ so we get balance in talk radio and at Fox News—like there is in the rest of the media.”

Representative Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.) and Senator Bernie Sanders (S-Vermont) are sponsoring the “Media Ownership Reform Act” (MORA) as a vehicle for restoring the Fairness Doctrine. “Under this bill, if Rush Limbaugh shoots his mouth off, he must give equal access to our side,” Hinchey said. “The American public will begin to get both sides or all sides of an issue. That is basic – fundamental to a democracy.”

Critics have dubbed the bill the “Hush Rush Law.” But Hinchey contends his bill is even-handed. “The right-wingers over at CBS, NBC, and the rest will all be required to give access to our side,” Hinchey insisted. “Government control over what the media says is the only way we can head-off a fascist takeover of America.”

Teh fairness doctrine is unconstitutional prior restraint pure and simple. It is very unlikely to survive a court case.

McCain/Feingold won't survive a court case either. When is that going to happen? It is critical to stop bad legislation before it becomes law. You're stuck with the law until the right court case comes along...if it ever comes along. There are 20,000 gun control laws on the books. I'm still waiting for the right court case to rule them unconstitutional.

That sounds like something Scrappleface would write.

right wingers at CBS? Not on the TV side, certainly.
Though CBS Radio works with Westwood One and their
talk hosts include O’Reilly and Dennis Miller (OK
not totally on the Right of every issue, but they’re
no Couric...)
