CBS Radio Pulls Show After D.J.’s Prank Call to Chinese Restaurant
NY Times ^ | 5/13/07

One month after the firing of radio host Don Imus, a pair of suspended New York shock jocks have been permanently pulled from the air by CBS Radio for a prank phone call rife with Asian stereotypes.

“The Dog House with JV and Elvis,” featuring Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay, “will no longer be broadcast,” CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo said yesterday.

CBS Radio dismissed Mr. Imus in April for a comment he made about the Rutgers women’s basketball team. He plans a $120 million breach of contract lawsuit.

The cancellation of the other show yesterday, nearly three weeks after Mr. Vandergrift and Mr. Lay were suspended, was another indication of the increased scrutiny on radio hosts and the heightened sensitivity of management to complaints in the wake of Mr. Imus’s firing.

“This is a victory not only for the Asian-American community, but for all communities who find themselves constant targets of racist and sexist programming,” said Jeanette Wang, an executive with the Organization of Chinese Americans.

Ms. Mateo declined to comment further on the “JV and Elvis” show, whose time slot on WFNY-FM was immediately after that of the shock jocks known as Opie and Anthony.

Gregg Hughes, who is Opie, and Anthony Cumia return to the station’s airwaves tomorrow after issuing an apology for a segment on their own satellite radio program in which they laughed as a homeless man fantasized about raping Condoleezza Rice and Laura Bush. The Rev. Al Sharpton, who played a role in Mr. Imus’s firing, said that Mr. Hughes and Mr. Cumia should also be fired.

Not so much bothered by the supposed racism, but it was right they were fired for disrupting an honest business the way they did.

B**LS**T. Fired, for what, the same radio gag that DJ's have done for years?

Have a sense of humor, or at least recognize the fact that someone else may have found it funny.

PC speech codes, tiny political groups with huge axes to grind, and siding with Al " I hate Whitey " Sharpton. Ahh, but it doesnt matter to me because I dont think they are funny.

As word spread about the fate of JV and Elvis, more than 100 people turned out for a rally in Union Square in support of them and other radio personalities under fire. “I find censorship to be far more offensive than anything that was said,” said Debbie Wolf of Far Hills, N.J., president of People Against Censorship.

We need to realize there are far more people like Deb (and myself), than there are of the perpetually offended.

JV and Elvis were hysterical (even though Elvis was a huge lib). I remember having to pull over sometimes because I was laughing so hard. I'll miss them. Ironically, JV is maried to an Asian girl.

Make no mistake, Rush and Sean are next.

I hate telemarketer calls and I can imagine how much a legit business hates calls that are made to just humor some people. There is many ways to be humorous. Making businesses utilize their time in listening to garbage should not be one of them.

This is the point that I make over and over again.

The knives are out for anyone that isnt towing the DailyKOS line, and if you think that elRushbo, Sean (even though he wimped out against Al “I hate Whitey” Sharpton, Levin, Beck, and the rest you are sadly mistaken.

These are the warm up rounds folks, because if they can get the guys who make jokes *Jokes*, what makes you think they cant get the politcal talkers?

Not the point, taxes. The point is that they got fired for words, just words taken out of the context of humor.

The excerpted portion of the article fails to detail the specific incident and I'm not about to register with the NY Times in order to find out.

If you know, and it appears as though you do, could you please provide the details as to what JV and Elvis did to get fired?

I didn't read the particulars, but if such a call is done with consideration, the time "wasted" could be worth the publicity to the business. It's free advertising.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who played a role in Mr. Imus’s firing, said that Mr. Hughes and Mr. Cumia should also be fired.

This coming from a man who led a mob outside a NYC courtroom insisting that the Central Park Jogger -- a white woman raped and beaten into a coma by a gang of "wilding" black youths in 1989 -- was a lying racist woman who falsely accused blacks of doing what her boyfriend had actually done (like with Tawana Brawley, these charges came without a shred of evidence). According to several accounts, the mob called her a "whore" (sound familiar?) and attempted to shout her shielded identity loud enough for TV cameras to record.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Sharpton.

Al also incited riots in which people were murdered. He should be in prison for life.

Well since I do answer the phone most of the time at a legitimate business, and having numerous years of experience answering the phones at other legitimate businesses, including radio and TV stations, I have to say that I would enjoy the challenge of encountering a radio “on air personality” if they ever tried to dial me.
Never had it happen.
Instead, I endure their stations marketing departments incessantly trying to offer prerecorded “free passes to the comedy club” for my entire company.
LOL!
Or some peoples repeated “accidental” miss-dials to the local golf course reservations line.
Next in annoyance are people who did not buy a product from me, but expect my company to give them free advise on how to operate it...
Then there are the recorded messages of shysters on automated computer systems offering low interest credit loans for businesses.
And let’s not even get into how I handle business targeting telemarketers asking to speak to the owner or manager of the company!

Thanks for that link!

I don't think the incident alone warranted their firing.

Having said that, I can recall a time when I was making prank calls...........I think I was around 11 or 12 years old.
