We believe that He still speaks to man;

Which is why we have dozens and dozens and dozens of new doctrines & covenants added to the D&C all throughout the 1900s, eh?

Contrary to myth, the Gospel of Jesus Christ as preached in the Book of Mormon is the same as the preached in the Bible - faith, repentance, grace, and the atonement of Jesus Christ are central themes of both volumes.

So the "gospel" of "How to become a god" is a myth? So the "gospel" of "ya gotta get married if you want the highest degree of glory" is a myth?

I believe that I will be saved by his grace, and all else is window dressing.

Delf, I'm glad you personally make this statement. But to imply that this is mainstream Mormonism is not exactly forthright.

Mainstream Mormonism when it comes to "grace" is more like this statement: "Man can transform himself, but he has in him the seeds of Godhood that can grow. He can lift himself by his very bootstraps." Former LDS prophet Spencer W. Kimball (Source: Salt Lake City Trib, 9/18/74)

He did not love Esau! and laid out a narrow path to salvation that many people would miss! While Gods love is beyond our comprehension so is the righteousness and severity of his judgment! Indeed his grace is amazing.

The D&C's final section - 138 - is the only one added in the 20th's century; it was added in 1918. Nothing else had been added since -I believe- before the 1850's.

Nevertheless, God does not reserve His word to that written in the D&C. When a prophet speaks in the name of God, it is God's word. We are then invited to confirm it as such through the Holy Ghost. Such happens quite frequently, even if it doesn't make the D&C. Here's an example:

The Family: A Proclamation to the World

This leaves me scratching me head. First, you criticize us for believing in modern-day revelation. Then, you wonder why we don't get more. I'm so very confused as to which way you want to have it.

BTW, I am working on the answer to your other question. I'm doing some research, so it's taking time. If I have time around the debate, I'll get it to you tonight.

Read the Book of Mormon. Tell me where you find either of those particular doctrines.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is very simple: faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, and persevering to the end.

Everything else is just details, including those doctrines you cite.

“And why should I believe you and your path is the only way to salvation?”

Careful! You might get called a “Mormon Apologist.”

Because LDS (1) recite Amos 3:7 as if this direct inside pipeline from Heaven to SLC exists...and that a torrent of divine revelation is pouring through this pipeline. If I know anything of water pipelines, it's meant for the grassroots who are thirsty--not for the politicians overseeing the city.

(2) LDS missionaries then use this "living prophet" idea as another hard sale to vulnerable folks. It's not til later that they realize that this "living prophet" hasn't exactly been so prophetic.

What's a "prophet" who doesn't prophesy?

Finally, it all takes away from Who the writer of Hebrews says is the "Living Prophet"--Jesus Christ: "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds." (Heb. 1:1-2)

One more thing according to the Deseret News (9/3/66, p.16--church news section), "Revelation...is an essential part of the true church, constant, current revelation..."

Wanna tell me what's so "constant" and "current" about this church's "revelation?"

If this is true, and I assume you believe it is, then if "constant, current revelation" is a sign of the true church, then lack of it means it's a sign of either an apostate or counterfeit church.

We receive what we believe to be revelation all the time. The doctrines that the Lord would have us know at this time have been given, so the D&C hasn’t grown in quite some time.

But we believe that the Lord Jesus Christ directs this Church and its work. He does so through revelation to His appointed servants. It happens on a daily basis, throughout the Church, from the father or mother caring for their family, to the Prophet receiving direction as to how the Church should organize its affairs.

I’ll give you one example. Just before 2000, there was a profusion of temples around the world. The reason this was possible was because the Church started building bare bones “mini-temples” in locations where the resources weren’t there for the more expensive, traditional, full-size temples. This allowed many members to more easily and frequently attend the temples.

The concept of these small temples was a new one. It had never been thought of before. How the idea came about is widely accepted by us to have been through revelation.

Who says that when God speaks, it always has to be earth-shattering?

If new doctrines are revealed at some point, I will study them and pray about them for verification. Until then, I’ve got plenty on my hands learning about the ones we already have.
