HOUSTON In a shift of tactics, Republican presidential contender Rudolph Giuliani acknowledged his liberal views Friday, calling a woman's right to choose an abortion one of his "core beliefs."
After a week of criticism for making contradictory comments about abortion, Giuliani also said he backs gay domestic partnerships that aren't marriage and the right of states to restrict guns.
Meanwhile, in an article titled "Behind Giuliani's Pro-Choice Gamble," found at www.Time.com, author David Von Drehle states that "Giuliani's decision to be more forthright about his pro-choice stance on abortion may be the boldest step of the Presidential campaign so far. And while it's certainly a gamble, because it will likely inflame the social-issue conservatives who form a key minority in the Republican party, it's far from reckless. On the contrary, it is the first tangible sign that a candidate did some hard thinking about the radically changed nature of this year's primary schedule and, in Giuliani's case, decided that the reign of social conservatives is coming to an end."
Giuliani, a New York Catholic who once considered the priesthood, chose to make his stand before a conservative, Protestant audience at Houston Baptist University in an appearance arranged just Wednesday.
His embrace of abortion, which dramatically sets him apart from his Republican rivals, represents a political gamble that his campaign felt he had to take since his liberal views as New York City mayor in the 1990s give him little room to maneuver.
"I believe abortion is wrong," he said. But out of respect for other people's fervent support of abortion, he said, "I would grant to women the right to make that choice."
Giuliani said his views have evolved, but those two "core beliefs" always have and always will guide him.

What an oracle you are, Robinson. You must have seen into Rudy’s heart.
He’s a liberal New Yorker and always will be. If conservatives are true to their convictions, he should be a memory by February.
I think he's saying he's not God, that he understands that God grants us all the responsibility to make moral choices.
What he lacks, apparently, is the conviction on the issue that compells a leader to understand that what is wrong can never be countenanced in sane law; that, while government is compelled to restrain itself from interfering with the responsibility of individuals to make moral choices, government itself is invested with a greater responsibility: the protection of the innocent.
I happen to think Rudy will get this.
And coming to an end, also, is America as we knew it....
As are too many republicans these days.
That’s why the Republicans have been losing, they act like RINOs and give you little reason to vote for them
Kinda sorta.
Sheeeeeesh!
Morality is not defined by individual choice.
Morality is defined by God.

If no set of moral ideas were better than another, there would be no sense in preferring civilised morality to Nazi morality. The moment you say one lot of morals is better than another, you are in fact measuring them by an ultimate standard.
C. S. Lewis

The moment you admit that there must be some ultimate standard, you are arguing for the existence of God.
The question then is, which God? The only one who withstands every test is the God of the Torah and the Bible.
You know Jim, it’s times like this I almost wish all of those freakin’RudyBots and RudyTooters, Zotserbaters, Trolls, etc., were still here on FR, just to see them spin madly like a whirling dervish, desperately trying to explain why their candidate is (snicker-laugh-guffaw) even ‘stronger than ever’, I tell ya, I would pay a stiff cover charge for that kind o’ entertainment!
We are witnessing the meltdown of a campaign, this will be something to tell our kids and grandkids about.
Adios Rudy, we hardly knew ye, but we knew all ABOUT ye!
And that shall be thy epitaph!
The Left wants a Social Utopia without God, and so do Libertarians.
Good luck with that.
It is not a claim of electoral demographics. It is a claim regarding who calls the shots in the GOP. Of course, if it was a statement about electoral demographics, he would be wrong about that.
Rudy Guiliani has no chance of winning. He will not get the votes of the people who put Republicans into the White House in this country, and if we end up with a weak, appeasing socialist Democrat as president it will be Guiliani's fault, if he doesn't leave the race.
I would hope that he would have enough concern and love for the country to do the right thing and sacrifice what may well be a longtime dream for him for the good of the American people.
“This guy must think he’s God.”
No, God doesn’t give a woman the choice to kill a baby. Giuliani’s stance leaves God entirely out of the matter and makes the woman her own god, deciding “good and evil.” This takes us all the way back to Satan in the Garden of Eden.
And this man claims to be Catholic...after all his adultery and multiple marriages? He and the Kennedys have a lot in common, both politically and morally.
You are a thinker.
So here's your chance to prove him wrong. The gauntlet has been laid down - Rudy is betting all on simple political calculus. Can a SoCon grass-roots effort derail big-money, big-state primaries, or have events irrevocably shifted in favor of moderates? What happens next if he is the GOP candidate?
Thank you. Sometimes that’s good, and sometimes it’s not, but we can take heart knowing that the victory is ours.

Mayor Ghouliani do the right thing. Abort your candidacy while it's still in the first trimester.
Nope. Been to wideawakes.net (where they now congregate), and they’re practically rejoicing at the thought of “the reign of social conservatives coming to an end”. It’s frightening how they’re really like, and how flippant they are concerning the morality of abortion: it’s as if they don’t understand WHY the Pro-Life wing of the GOP is so important and why we’re so adamant about some candidates.
Alas, Rudyism is a Mental Disorder.
As for me, my boot still has plenty of wear left in it.
When it wears out, I’ll switch feet.
