The key facts are familiar. A politician gets a fancy vacation and perhaps other lucrative benefits. And a defense contractor gets multi-million-dollar government contracts. The question now: Was any of it criminal?
The new governor of Nevada, Jim Gibbons, is being investigated by the FBI because of alleged gifts and payments from Warren Trepp, a defense contractor whose Nevada firm received tens of millions of dollars in federal contracts.
The FBI wants to know if Gibbons, while a member of Congress, improperly used his influence to help Trepp get those contracts.
Software designer Dennis Montgomery was also on that cruise with Gibbons. He estimates the trip cost "probably $20,000 a person," claiming he saw the invoice. Montgomery says his former business partner Trepp chartered a 727 to fly guests from Nevada to Florida and back and picked up the tab for penthouse rooms, private meals and expensive wines.
So sure that Montgomery has made the same allegations in federal court. Montgomery's wife also says she saw Trepp pass casino chips to Gibbons. In addition, Montgomery provided NBC with hundreds of e-mails, he says, from Trepp's computer.
Days before the cruise, Trepp's wife e-mails her husband: "Please don't forget to bring the money you promised Jim and Dawn on the trip."
Hours later, Trepp e-mails back: "Don't ever send this kind of message to me! Erase this message from your computer now!"
There also is a paper trail showing Gibbons helped Trepp's company, eTreppid, get government contracts.

I'll bet $5 no charges are ever filed. Any takers?
“”I’m not the kind of congressman or governor that would ever accept any kind of payment or bribe or gift or whatever it is!” he says.””
I’m stumped. What other kind is there?
Yes, the freezer search is next.
I'll bet $5 no charges are ever filed. Any takers?
Yes, me.
This started / came to light in the run-up to his election, bits and pieces, here and there. Nothing real solid, just kept re-surfacing every now and then. Not head-line grabbing, but not going away.
Even though he is a Republican, he sure sounded like a 'Rat in the denials...used every play book response they do.
Oh yes, me thinks you owe me $5.00 - payable in gold only, thank you! lol
The Fed "stink" dogs are hot on the trail...and I think for good reason. Lots more to come, so stay tuna-ed.
Keep in mind that if he were 'Rat affiliated, I'd owe you $5 because you would be right.
He's a 'character', no doubt.
Which comes as a complete shock to the LV/NV community - the reputation of our previous politicans was absolutely spotless.........giggle.
Hee hee hee. I guess she forgot to erase it.
The answer is not yes, but hell yes. If someone can identify a member of congress, a cabinet or sub-cabinet member, who does not leave government a very rich person, the Justice Department does not want to hear about it.
Would you accept a $5 chip from the Four Queens?
No way. I don't go down there - too many touristo's.
Santa Fe Station, thank you!
Santa Fe Station — you got it.
BTW, I take it that’s a cool place when the locals go?
We know at least one of their senators is corrupt. But he is a democRAT so we wouldn’t expect otherwise.
To bad the capital is Carson City.
Yes, not on the Strip. Some great restaurants.
But you know, there's something about that e-mail exchange that just rings false. Even if Mrs. T had a good reason for e-mailing Mr. T about the raison d'être for the cruise, a typical wifely reminder would be along the lines of "... and don't forget Jim and Dawn's present," wouldn't it -- instead of being spelled out with alphabet blocks, the-money-you-promised-the-trip, for the special prosecutor.
And why in the name of all that's plausibly deniable would Mr. T compound the stupidity with that imbecilic return note, doubling the number of messages that need to be deleted and inviting a why-whatever-do-you-mean-dear reply from the missus?
This smells, and my nickel says it's Eau de Frame-Up No. 5.
Whaddaya bet mob lawyer Harry Reid is behind this somehow.
Nope, I don’t want to take that bet. I’m afraid I’d lose.
The minute I saw the headline, I thought, “What a coincidence! The FBI is after another Republican!”
Dingy Harry will remain immune, but they are after Republican politicians all over the country. There was always some bias that way in the FBI, which is stuffed full of clintonoids at the top. But now that Bush is a lame duck with his back to the wall, and Gonzalez is dangling in front of Nostrils Waxman, they are pulling out all the stops.
There was an article on the FBI going after Doolittle in California posted here just a few hours ago. Republican, naturally.
Wake me up when they go after a Democrat.
He is a politician, in America, in 2007 A.D. Soon there shall come the revelations of lust, drugs, gluttony, hate of all that is good, arrogance, greed and general all around vice addiction.
