Democratic National Committee chair Howard Dean - who once drew criticism by dismissing the GOP as a "white Christian party'' -- told a San Francisco audience that his party should open its arms to a new group of converts: young evangelical Christian voters. "We ought to reach out to those folks ... and not be afraid,'' Dean told an audience of about 125 at a $50-a head Democratic National Committee fundraiser Wednesday night at the Palace Hotel. ...
... "People don't want to go to church anymore ... and come out feeling bad because they happen to know somebody who's gay,'' he said. "People want to go to church because they know what they can do about poverty, about Darfur, about the environment.'' Dean specifically cited the positive impacts of Christian leaders such as Rick Warren -- author of the best-selling "The Purpose-Driven Life,'' and pastor of the Orange County-based Saddleback Church -- and of young pastor Joel Osteen, the televangelist sensation who has welcomed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to his Houston-based Lakewood Church. "Those people don't beat up on other people to make their point and raise a lot of money,'' he said. ...
... Dean said he is raising money for the party to prepare it for what he expects will be a nasty 2008 election. "We know we're going to get swift-boated right around February next year,'' he said, referring to attacks on 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry funded by private donors. But he vowed "this time, we're going to have $18.5 million in this special fund, ready to say to the nominee -- 'here you go, go fight 'em off and do whatever you have to do.' ''

"People don't want to go to church anymore ... and come out feeling bad because they happen to know somebody who's gay"
So people should only come out of church feeling good? Never challenged or bad about their condition? Good description of a spiritually weak/dead church.
"People want to go to church because they know what they can do about poverty, about Darfur, about the environment."
That's what church is supposed to be about according to Dean - material things. Forget the spiritual.

Hate to say it but anyone who makes a statement like that is not a saved Christian and has bigger things to worry about than trying to hustle votes.
This is the church that AlGore is building now.
A REAL Evangelical Christian would NEVER vote Democrat!
That was the Unitarian church 35 years ago - I remember organic tomato farming and Vietnamese orphans but not God. Dean hasn’t a clue why evangelicals go to church.

Good question!
Were you ever under the illusion that he was a “saved Christian”? He is only looking at this from a political point, definitely not spiritual. He wants votes and converts to the Democrat party.
Howard Dean is more slick than I gave him credit for. This is essentially a divide and conquer strategy. After that works against the churches, then it’s time to destroy them.
This is the church that AlGore is building now.
A REAL Evangelical Christian would NEVER vote Democrat!
That’s true!
Unfortunately, it also describes most mainline Protestant denominations.
I hope he gets a bunch of blistering hell fire and brimstone Bible thumpers.
Pray all you want, Howard. It ain’t gonna happen.
I hope us Bible thumpers love him because he is our enemy...
Bartender—I want whatever he’s drinking. These DNC types know so little about Christianity that it’s laughable! Maybe these fools ought to spend a couple of weeks reading the Bible and touring evangelical churches before they plan on pulling the wool over anyone’s eyes.
Evangelicals don't want to embrace your Chamberlainesque pacifism, your love of infanticide, and your penchant for grabbing personal property, wealth, and weaponry.
Evangelicals, by and large, love the Constitution. Democrat operatives don't.
I used to be a Democrat, Howard. I know what you're all about.
