Patrick warns of 'circus' atmosphere if gay marriage is on ballot

BOSTON --Gov. Deval Patrick warned Thursday that Massachusetts will be crippled by a "political circus" if a proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage makes it to the state ballot.

The Democratic governor, speaking to reporters a day after lawmakers delayed a vote on the proposed amendment, said he was actively lobbying legislators to kill it.

"If this does get to a popular ballot, there is very little other business that will get done in Massachusetts politics and policy making while that is pending," Patrick said.

Lawmakers on Wednesday postponed a vote until at least June 14. As expected, a joint session of the House and Senate convened, but quickly recessed without the vote.

Before it can reach the 2008 ballot, the proposed amendment needs the backing of a quarter of the state's legislators -- 50 lawmakers -- in two successive sittings of the Legislature. It won approval in the previous Legislature in January, on the final day of the session.

A 2003 Supreme Judicial Court ruling had legalized gay marriage in Massachusetts.

"Rather than turn Massachusetts into a political circus for a national debate over something which is largely settled here, my own view is that we ought to resolve this on the merits so that it stays off the ballot, and to do so at the constitutional convention," Patrick said.

Today about 57 lawmakers support the amendment, advocates on both sides of the issue agree. There are 200 lawmakers in the House and Senate.

What’s so terrible about voters deciding issues that are important to them?

Massachusetts is already a circus, and Deval’s the clown.

(The clown car is also occupied by Kerry, Kennedy, Barney Frank, Delahunt, Meehan, ....)

Uh, isn’t it already crippled by the dubious distinction of being the home of gay marriage? Oh, and Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Gerry Studds, Bawney Fwank, etc.

How long can that guy last in the governor’s office?

Didn’t he take a leave of absence to take care of his wife and to take his Cadillac in for servicing?

Devil Patrick is a change agent for the Cultural Revolution.

Massachusetts has been a political circus forever.

What he’s worried about is the Cultural Revolution might encounter an obstacle if the unwashed Hoi Poloi, influenced by rightist exponents like Howie Carr locally and Rush Limbaugh nationally, have a say in anything cultural.

Most of the people in Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, too, just don’t get it.

The Donkey Party is really the Maoist party.

The Donkey Party is the Cultural Revolution party.

The Donkey Party is the party of Mao’s Little Red Book.

People keep voting for the Donkeys because they want a handout, whether it’s shiny sports uniforms for the school collective, or whether it’s money for the abortion clinic, or whether it’s medical care for the illegal aliens.

But while one hand is passing out the dollars, the other hand is taking away freedoms and advancing Mao’s Cultural Revolution right here in our midst.

Gotta do some pinging later.

Devil Patrick is a backer of “gay marriage” and he accuses other people of creating a circus?

Mass-of-two-sh!ts is a horse stable. A circus would be a clear improvement. Of course, a society where judges make new laws & rights up out of thin air is pretty darn close to a dictatorship.

Wonder if that is a threat or a promise? If it doesn’t get to the ballot, Devil (misspelled intentionally) can look for a mass exodus that makes the last few years look mild in comparison! Now THAT is a promise! People are just ill over this, and are standing up in large numbers and saying not only that enough is enough, they are saying they have had it!

More thugism from the leftists - vote our way or there’ll be trouble - clearly they haven’t evolved enough to be able to participate in democratic government.....

Wow! The Democrat Party in Massachusetts really doesn’t want this to appear on a ballot for people to vote on.
