Former President Jimmy Carter recently has stepped up his efforts to split the bonds between Evangelical voters and Israel. From The Jewish Week:
Wading into the delicate fray over the alliance between Jews and pro-Israel Evangelicals, former President Jimmy Carter last week reportedly said it was a mistake for Jews to accept such ties, and that he was working to convince Southern Baptists to change the way they look at Judaism and the Middle East.Christian Zionists can be better friends of Israel by challenging its government's policies, while accepting Judaism as a legitimate path to God, Carter told a group organized by Rabbi Michael Lerner in California last week, according to the rabbi.
"He said it was a terrible error for Jews to become allied with Christian Zionists who actually desire our conversion or burning in hell," Rabbi Lerner related in an interview Tuesday.
The alliance between Jewish and Evangelical Christian supporters of Israel has grown over the years. Evangelical support for Israel is often misunderstood and in some cases maligned-it comes often from the most noble of reasons. Regardless of one's views, this support has been very important.
The International Fellowship of Christian and Jews, headed by Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, has been in the forefront of building these links and raises many millions of dollars from Evangelical Christians to help Jews around the world who are in need. Christians United for Israel has become a politically influential voice for Israel around the nation. In an era during which Israel has lost support in many quarters, this support from Evangelical Christians should be welcomed. Yet, there are forces developing that are not attempting to erode this support. I wrote about this dynamic earlier in this article, "Splitting the Evanngelicals from Israel".
Don’t Jews have a “Covenant”?
BTW, this Rabbi Lerner is a 9/11 truth nutcase. Shows what kind of people support Jimmah.
Surprise; I disagree with the drooling old fool on both counts: I support its government's policies most of the time (when they're bold and assertive), and I reject Judaism as (anymore) a legitimate path to God.
Carter can stick it in his ear. He’s a walking fraud and has no business attempting to speak for Southern Baptists because he ISN’T ONE!
Carter’s views on Israel make the Klan, neo-nazis, and Islamo-fascists proud.
He was a nutcase long before 9/11!
Wow Dershowitz said that. amazing
AKA "Rabbi Moonbeams"
Carter will not be able to dissuade Baptists from their support of Israel if they are Bible-believing Baptists.
I do not know about the Southern Baptist Convention folks. I am a member of a Baptist church, but not a member of one which has any affiliation with any denominational structure. We still believe what earlier Southern Baptists believed — local church autonomy. But my question is: are most Southern Baptist folks still Premillennial in their eschatology? Or has this shifted?
Jimmy Carter and Michael Lerner hanging out together alert ping!
Is it really true that Carter is not a member of a Southern Baptist church? Do we know where he keeps his membership?
The purpose of this Carter-Lerner alliance is purely political and their agenda is to harm Israel in any way possible.
IMO, Jimmah Carter has gone so far over the edge, he should just be let go to drift out into the atmosphere.
He is nuttier now than he ever was in office, and he certainly was no prize then.
What the Israel ever do to him that he is so passionate about doing anything to hurt them?
As far as I know he left the SBC and joined up with the liberal Cooperative Baptist Fellowship some years ago.
“Jimmah needs to read his Bible now and then...”
You’d think that a former sunday school teacher would already know what it says. Just more proof the man is clueless.
Anything that isolates Israel is fair game to them. He is a Jew hater of the first order.
You said — “Is Carter doing his part to ensure that the U.S. does its part in meeting that prediction?”
—
Well, he might be trying to, but he won’t accomplish it for the Evangelicals who know the Bible. However, when the Rapture happens, it will be a different story for the U.S. and then it will probably join the rest of the world against Israel...
it will never happen, not with true believers anyway.
