May 10, 2007 - Obama Runs Closest To Giuliani In Connecticut, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Clinton Losing Ground In Main Race, Dem Primary

Word format

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani leads all Democratic contenders in the 2008 presidential race in Connecticut, squeaking by Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 44 - 42 percent; inching past former Vice President Al Gore 45 - 42 percent, and beating New York Sen. Hillary Clinton 48 - 42 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Sen. Clinton tops Arizona Sen. John McCain 47 - 40 percent.

This compares to a 46 - 44 percent Clinton lead over Giuliani in a February 19 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

In other possible presidential matchups: Clinton tops former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson 49 - 33 percent; Obama beats McCain 46 - 38 percent; Gore tops McCain 45 - 41 percent; Gore beats Thompson 51 - 29 percent; Obama bests Thompson 51 - 27 percent.

In a Democratic primary, Clinton leads with 28 percent, followed by Obama with 20 percent, compared to a 33 - 21 percent Clinton lead February 19. In this latest survey, Gore gets 13 percent, with 8 percent for 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards and 6 percent for Sen. Christopher Dodd.

Giuliani gets 36 percent of Republicans, with 15 percent for McCain, Mitt Romney at 9 percent, Thompson at 7 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 5 percent.

"Connecticut voters credit New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for his role in the 9/11 recovery," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D.

"This follows the pattern of another neighboring state, New Jersey, where Quinnipiac University polls show Giuliani running strong," Schwartz added.

"Giuliani benefits from being an almost hometown candidate, but native son Sen. Christopher Dodd gains no traction among Connecticut voters, ranking fifth among Democratic contenders with only 6 percent of the vote.

"While this presidential campaign changes from week to week, the surprise this week is Sen. Barack Obama's performance against Giuliani and Sen. Clinton's loss of support in the head-to-head matchup."

Clinton gets a 49 - 42 percent favorability rating from Connecticut voters, down from 53 - 36 percent February 19. Favorability ratings for other contenders are: 61 - 25 percent for Giuliani; 48 - 28 percent for McCain; 51 - 15 percent for Obama; 46 - 28 percent for Edwards; 54 - 37 percent for Gore; 45 - 31 percent for Dodd; For Thompson, 63 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion. For Romney, 60 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion. President Bush's Approval

Connecticut voters disapprove 72 - 24 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, unchanged from February 19.

Voters disapprove 77 - 20 percent of President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq, and say 65 - 30 percent that going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do.

From May 2 - 7, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,427 Connecticut registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. The survey includes 375 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 5.1 percentage points, and 543 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and the nation as a public service and for research

Look, the way I see it right now Guiliani is the best shot at winning the white house. In order for us to keep Hillary or Obama out of the white house, we have to nominate somebody with strong independent appeal. Rudy has that. A traditional conservative isn’t going to win right now given the political climate of this country. Independents hate Bush right now and they hate conservatism. And if we nominate somebody like Fred Thompson or Duncan Hunter, then they are going to get slaughtered in the General Election.

If you want to flame me and call me a liberal hack then go right ahead. I really don’t care. I love George W. Bush and I campaigned for him twice. And it kills me the amount of hatred in the country for such a good man who’s trying the best he can to keep all of us save. And I do believe in conservative values and I wish it wasn’t the case. But unless we nominate somebody who has appeal amongst the independent voters, than I don’t think we’ll win. And until I see something that shows me that a guy like Fred Thompson would have a chance against Hillary or Obama, Rudy is who I plan to support in the primaries.

Okay, go ahead and flame me now

There is a saying: The enemy of my enemy is MY FRIEND.
I think what you are currently seeing is that Rudy is a MSM darling “leader” because he will divide the Republican party from its strength. The strength of the Republican party is its conservatism. How many of the Democrat House seats were won by candidates moving “towards” conservatism? How many Republican House seats were lost by lib candidates?

If the MSM can keep Rudy as a winner they get a lib (I don’t think anyone can deny he is a flaming lib with all the evidence out there). That lib would run on the Republican ticket against a lib on the Democrat ticket. The media as a bonus gets those “evil social conservatives” all in an uproar.

With the rationale that Rudy would be a magnet for the Independent voters; where is the calculation for the “conservative” votes bolting the election for a conservative candidate? How many votes would be lost to that? There is a difference between liberals and conservatives. Conservatives operate on principal and liberals operate on power. Conservatives have to vote their conscience. I don’t know what the percentages on this are but I am positive that a great number of Democrat voters could have their candidate rape someone and they would justify it and still vote for the candidate.

There are too many dynamics to compromise with principals. If Hillary is selected, how many people will not vote for her because of her background? If Obama, how many racists will not vote for him? etc etc

Well then, if what you are saying is true, the Republicans are screwed in 2008. A conservative like Thompson or Hunter won’t win because they won’t get the independent vote. A more moderate like Rudy or McCaon won’t win cause they won’t motivate the Conservative base.

In otherwords, WE’RE ALL SCREWED!!!!

Like I said, we’re screwed if what you all are saying is the case. Conservatives won’t vote for Giuliani, and Independets won’t vote for a conservative candidate either. I guess Hillary might as well start planning her innauguration now.

But that’s the way I feel.

Usually, liberals do what they feel, while conservatives act on what they think.

How many, and which, of your core conservative values have you had to compromise in order to support Guiliani?

At what point do you believe that the political ground you are willing to compromise will be regained by conservatives?

Oh comeon. You can do better than that. I both donated and worked on the last 3 GOP presidential campaigns. I have a tremendous ammount of respect for our current president, and I continute to show and express my support for him, even today with the whole country hating his guts.

And now, you are gonna go and call me a liberal because I would vote for Rudy to prevent a Clinton or Obama presidency. Well, I don’t have to listen to it or you!!!

A hard conservative WON’T win in 2008. People are leaving the Republican party in droves because the MSM and the Democrats are succeeding in their mission to destory the current president’s image forever. The age we live in right now, is too important to the future of our country to be able to have a democrat in the white house. If this was 12 years ago, I would never support a guy like Giuliani. But I don’t see another candidate on our side who can win the independent vote right now. And we CAN’T win without the independents. That is a fact!!

It will be the fault of every voter willing to vote for a liberal....including you.

Then again, why are you suddenly worried about Hillary?

Hillary sucks. She has no place to go but down. Once she clearly loses her lead in the polls, she will never get it back. Just like McCain, she has nothing to offer or to motivate people to make them go out and want to vote for her. -- John Cena, May 3

The bad news continues for Hillary. Her poll numbers are tanking, her lead over Obama in the primaries is all but gone, and now the black leaders who she thought she once had are now ready to jump over to the Obama camp. HILLARY IS TOAST!!!!--John Cena, April 24

Like I said. Hillary sucks and will never EVER become president.--John Cena, April 23

My girlfriends cat could beat hillary.--John Cena, March 21

Don’t bother trying to put across a rational thought about this election. Everyone is waiting for the elusive candidate Fred or Duncan's their man. Fred's a good guy but I don’t think he’s running and Duncan is a great guy too, but he can’t win. I too will vote for Rudy if he can beat the dems in 08. My #1 issue is national security and I can’t trust dems to get job done.
