OTOH, maybe he was a gourmet and knew that $20 would not be enough to finance the last meal of his choosing.
Personally, I would want to allow a condemned man $100 for his last meal, plus a nice cigar if he wanted one.
Okay, I'm currently on a diet and am really hungry.

Please note also that our resident chefs here on FR can (and, I've no doubt, would) do so also, probably making even finer meals than I would serve. $20?? For $20 a day (with real cooks, not the clowns serving food in prisons), you can easily eat like a king.
I quit smoking cigs last year.
I was in Honduras recently and Cohibas were about $3 bucks so I spent 25 minutes puffing one. WOW. That was great. Smooth, tasty. Didn't make me want to restart smoking either. It was my first indulgence in over a year, man that was fantastic. That commie makes a good smoke.
Are you nuts? Don't you know that cigars cause oral cancer?
Not to mention the threat to the lives of prison officials from second-hand smoke exposure.
