HERMOSILLO, Sonora — Four gunmen opened fire on a group of migrants as they crossed the border into the United States, wounding a Mexican man in the arm, police said.

Rosario Porpe Sosa, 24, crossed back into Mexico after the shooting Tuesday and was hospitalized in Caborca some 40 miles south of the border with Arizona, Sonora state police said in a statement. His condition was not immediately known.

The migrants had entered the United States at Sasabe, a common crossing point for people heading north illegally.

Authorities did not give details about the attackers or a possible motive.

Gustavo Soto, a spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol's Tucson sector, confirmed there had been an incident but said he did not immediately have further details.

I’m not condoning it, but if the government won’t protect our borders, this could likely become a recurring event.

If we know where the common crossing are then we should have the Border Patrol there. What is wrong with us?

So IOW we only have the words of criminals as to this story?

There could be a war between coyotes going on here, or a drug cartel conflict. Why in the world don’t we have BP permanently stationed there if everyone knows that’s where they are coming across? Of course they will go somewhere else, but that somewhere else will be more difficult than crossing there. If we don’t have the will to stop them, can’t we at least make it inconvennient for them? I think a few episodes of people being mysteriously shot as they cross the border illegally might not be a bad thing.

Much of the surrounding area belongs to the Tohono O’odham (Papago for old schoolers) tribe and the tribe is present on both sides of the border.

Maybe the BP is happy to let these Natives police thier own lands?

Or maybe the Tohono O’odham are tired of the invaders?

Or, more likely, rival gangs are shooting it out.

The area was always very dangerous to drive through.

Given the Ramos and Campeon (sp) cases, would you want to be a BP agent? Go to jail for doing your job.

I appreciate the border patrol, but our government does not apparently.

I normally do not support worker strikes, but a BP strike and a nationwide trucker’s strike (Mex truck deal), I could get behind that protest. It would wake up a lot of people. But the trucker’s are going to have to do that before the Mex trucks start rolling. The BP should do it before the summer really hits.

I don’t like what would happen, but apparently something drastic has to happen for revolution to spark.

If it’s good enough for Johnny Sutton, it ought to be good enough for us./s
