Giuliani Forced To Clarify His Stance on Abortion
The New York Sun ^ | May 9, 2007 | RUSSELL BERMAN

WASHINGTON — Mayor Giuliani's presidential bid has become a tale of two campaigns. One track focuses on the issues he wants to discuss — fiscal conservatism and the war on terror, chiefly — while the other deals with the issues that he would rather avoid: abortion, gun control, and gay rights. Yesterday, the talk was abortion.

Following the disclosure that Mr. Giuliani personally donated money to a leading abortion rights group, the former mayor gave his most expansive explanation yet of his position on abortion.

While reiterating his personal opposition to the practice, he couched it as a matter of personal liberty and said he thought a "majority of Americans" share his opinion.

Rudy had some real trouble with his interview by Laura. The last two paragraphs of this article are priceless:

What is clear is that Mr. Giuliani wants to talk about something else. In a well-received speech to the conservative Heritage Foundation here on Monday night, he did not talk about social issues at all, sticking to his campaign themes of economic and national security. And when Ms. Ingraham asked him to return for another interview, Mr. Giuliani pleaded for her to ask him about those issues, which he said is what "most citizens ask" about on the campaign trail.

Ms. Ingraham, who had also asked him about guns, immigration, and briefly about taxes, made no guarantees. "Conservatives are citizens, too, Mayor Giuliani," she responded. "We're citizens, too."

A few more interviews like that and Rudy won't even be a viable candidate.

Rudy is a fine man but his stance on abortion, illegal immigration, gun control, as well as others prevent me from voting for him.

Rudy cant explain away a lifetime record.

If he were running as a Democrat he would stand a better chance. basically he is a Lieberman democrat.

HIs stance that most worries me is his support for the “global warming” scam and all the communism that inevitably has to go with it.

He seemed to act ike a caring father for the city of N.Y. in the aftermath of 9-11.

I want him to clarify his position on the Second Amendment.

It's kind of tough to keep up the ruse of "I'm personally opposed to abortion, but it is still the law of the land" when you make personal donations to Planned Parenthood.

“He seemed to act ike a caring father for the city of N.Y. in the aftermath of 9-11.”

Even though you said you would not vote for him, Joe, you must know you CANNOT offer Giuliani a kind word here.

S’funny. I can’t remember the last time the MSM and the Right were on the same side; you really have to ask yourself why. But now article after article delights in pointing out Rudy’s social liberalism, and how it’s going to be SO problematic for the right. *sigh*

They are working hard to tear down the viability of his candidacy (both the right and the MSM), and the upshot will be a Clinton Presidency and the demise of the United States as the pre-eminent force in the world. Which of course is exactly what the MSM wants.

The Right? They will have flexed their muscles within the Party, and while they couldn’t defeat Hillary - to the possibly eternal detriment of the country - they will have boldly defeated the RINOs. A pyrrhic victory, don’tcha think?

Just what the MSM wants.

So, the Republican Party will nominate a candidate that appeals to Conservatives, is a political (or intellectual) lightweight, will scare the pants off the middle*, spend millions and months of campaign capital trying to garner the name recognition that Giuliani already owns, and will lose by six points to Hillary Clinton.

How is it better to accept a pro-abortion, pro-homosexual unions/marriage, pro-gun control, pro-illegal alien candidate? What is the point of supporting the GOP if this is the best we can do?

I don't accept that it is.

Rudy is a fine man but his stance on abortion, illegal immigration, gun control, as well as others prevent me from voting for him.

I can't imagine what else is left that might possibly qualify him as a "fine man." You've eliminated most of the important issues and what's left certainly does not qualify him as a "fine man."

I think most people see this backwards. When one goes to work for a company, one is expected to obey and support company policy. A party’s nominee must obey and support the party platform and keep his personal feelings to himself. We are electing a representative, not a dictator. We have more power than we are using.

I understand your concerns.
I do however believe the GOP has loads of dirt to spill on the Clintons in the event that Mrs. Clinton gets the nomination.

I honestly believe we have film of Bill with numerous bimbos,
as well as malfeasance on both.
I think when we start unloading on them and they start their B.S. in ernest they will be rejected by the vast majority.
Folks are tired of their little play and want them both to just go away.
You’ve heard how folks are tired of them shaking them down for donations forever and her imperious attitude.
Rudy is a good man I’m hoping for someone who more shares my values ideas and hopes.

This is one issue where a political opportunist simply will not do. Those who govern our land ought to have firm convictions when it comes to respect for the lives of unborn children. The Democrat party, for reasons I do not understand is sorely lacking in this regard, but they have a friend in Rudy.

Oh FCOL!!! Blah, blah, blah. Mz Clinton isn't even out of the primary and you already have her winning the national election. Go polish your crystal ball.

What many of us on the right realize is that Mz Clinton and Giuliani are damn near interchangeable. The only differences, between the two, of which I am familiar are a Y chromosome and the fact that the former NYC mayor looks better in fishnet stockings.

I’m sorry but that just makes me want to puke. The President is not your father. The government is not your mother.

I agree. A person can’t be PERSONALLY opposed while making PERSONAL contributions to Planned Parenthood.

Read history of Planned Parenthood. There’s NO WAY a person who is personally opposed would contribute to THAT organization.

I'm glad at least one other person gets it.

Laura Ingraham absolutely embarrassed Rudy on her show last night. It was, no exaggeration, some of the best radio I've ever heard. The end of the interview went something like this...

Rudy: I hope you have me back on the show so I can talk about the war on terror. That's what most citizens ask me about.

Laura: Well, Rudy, conservatives are citizens too. *Click*
