Why not 50 or 500 or 1000 MPG? Just pass a law! It’s that simple.
Politicians are mostly lawyers, not engineers or economists—and it shows! Government is indeed the problem. What do they expect when they prevent drilling for new oil, refuse to allow anyone to build a nuke plant, mandate a wide variety of gasoline blends, and stop new refineries. What in the world do they expect? Yet, the very problems they cause they try to correct with further manipulations—CLUELESS!
