A wildfire roared across brush-covered hills in the city's sprawling Griffith Park on Tuesday, triggering evacuations of homes and some of the city's most famous landmarks.
A wall of flames raced across ridges and jumped fire lines late in the evening as the fire drew closer to homes and the Griffith Observatory.
Hundreds of firefighters and five water-dropping helicopters rushed to Los Angeles' landmark park _ a mix of wilderness, cultural venues, horse and hiking trails and recreational facilities set on more than 4,000 acres on the hills between Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley.
Late Tuesday, authorities called for a mandatory evacuation of homes that sit along the park's southern edge as the fire burned out of control after dusk.
Rangers evacuated the park's Vermont Canyon area, which includes the Los Angeles Zoo, two golf facilities, a merry-go-round and school, said Jane Kolb, a city Department of Recreation and Parks spokeswoman.

Damn, right next to the observatory. ....which was just renovated, if I’m not mistaken.
That zoo evacuation must’ve been quite a trick.
All those eucalyptus trees. They contain oil which explodes the trees when they burn.
My son’s class has a trip to the L.A. Zoo planned for next Wednesday. I hope they’re able to control this fire, it’s looking like a fierce one.
They apparently cleaned out the zoo ?
Where would they put all the animals ?
There are some that would need ‘special’ handling ?
That zoo evacuation mustve been quite a trick.
My favorite local hiking area is going to look like a desolate moonscape until we get some real rain. And all the trees at Dante’s lookout are gone. If there is any good news, the tree people at the Greek Theatre will now have a much less obstructed view of the stage. And no homes have been lost. L.A. has the best structure protection fire fighters in the world, because they have so much experience. I’m sure this is the first of many. If your an L.A. fire fighter, I hope your in good shape. Business will be booming this year with tinder conditions everywhere. And make sure you buy tons of carbon credits, because L.A. is going to do everything it can to lead the nation in heating the planet.
If the HOLLYWOOD sign burns, will they get the letters straight next time?
A sad sight...
