Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani defended his for-and-against views on abortion yesterday, insisting Republicans should "respect me for telling you the truth." "Because this is something that I have thought about a lot - prayed about," Giuliani told nationally syndicated radio host Michael Reagan, son of the late President Ronald Reagan. "And I know what the easier answer is, but for me this is the right answer."
Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani defended his for-and-against views on abortion yesterday, insisting Republicans should "respect me for telling you the truth."
"Because this is something that I have thought about a lot - prayed about," Giuliani told nationally syndicated radio host Michael Reagan, son of the late President Ronald Reagan. "And I know what the easier answer is, but for me this is the right answer."
Not that Giuliani's answer got a whole lot clearer yesterday in his first extensive comments on abortion since last week's GOP debate.
At the debate, Giuliani said it would be "okay" with him if the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion, then added it would also be "okay" if it didn't - drawing criticism from both sides for trying to have it both ways on the hot-button issue.
Yesterday, when asked by Reagan why he won't just be "pro-choice and get over it," the former mayor said, "The fact is that is my stance, and I do feel very strongly about it."
He went on to say that while he is "personally" opposed to abortion, he recognized that many others disagreed and that ultimately it was a matter of "personal choice."
"In our country, the best answer is to let people make that judgment [for themselves], and then do what you can to limit abortions," said Giuliani. "Encourage adoptions ... do things like ban partial-birth abortions.
"That is my view," he added, "and I haven't changed it in years."
That's not entirely true: As mayor, Giuliani said in 1999 he thought the late-term abortion that critics call partial-birth abortion should remain an option for women. He now supports the Supreme Court's ban on the procedure.
His comments, which will be aired on Reagan's show tonight at 6:30, come as rival GOP presidential contender Sen. John McCain appears to be closing the gap to within a few points with Giuliani, a new CNN poll showed yesterday.
Campaigning in Iowa yesterday, the anti-abortion McCain (R-Ariz.) seemed to take a jab at Giuliani when he said he thought it would be "tough" for any pro-choice Republican to win the nomination.
"I think it's one of the fundamental principles of a conservative to have respect and commitment to the dignity of human life, both the born and unborn," McCain said in an interview with The Associated Press.
Ping, if you’re interested.

I guess God told Fred Thompson to be pro-choice too. Check the above link where he said abortion should be legal.
I love your headline addition. Something tells me, that it may not have been God that gave him that answer.
Fred is light years away from either Mitt or Rudy. He supported overturning Roe (leaving it to the States), waiting periods, notification, etc.... versus Rudy who supports federal funding of abortion on demand. Lots of differences.
Mitt? You guys attack him for flip flopping on abortion. Seems to Thompson’s no different than Mitt on abortion: once pro-choice, now pro-life.
Let’s see: 1994 statement VS statement from YESTERDAY
Fred: 100% pro-life votes in Senate/ 0% NARAL rating/National
Right to Life gives him a glowing report in 94/Says seeing his daughter’s ultrasound was a revelation.
Giulinani: Multiple donations to Planned Parenthood/ 100% NARAL rating/Addresses NARAL meetings/Didn’t support PBA ban during Clinton Era/supports tax money funded abortions/would pay to murder his own unborn grandchild.
I’ll take door number one.
Parents shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their parents; only for their own crimes may persons be put to death.
~ Deuteronomy 24:16
But your eyes and your heart
are set only on dishonest gain,
on shedding innocent blood
and on oppression and extortion.”
~ Jeremiah 22:17
“”Because this is something that I have thought about a lot - prayed about,””
Prayed... to who I wonder?
Rudy must have prayed to Molech to arrive at his conclusion.
Fred Thompson answered a questionnaire in 1994 and he was pro-choice, with limits. When he became a U.S. Senator, he never voted pro-choice, but had a 100% pro-life rating. So rather than misrepresent Fred Thompson, you should be honest with the facts.
By taking door #1, a guy few people outside the GOP know or care about other than from some TV show, one with apparent little fire in his belly to actually be president since he can’t make up his damned mind, you’ll be taking Hillary. Thompson will neither have the appeal nor the money to beat Hillary in a year when the GOP is going to be badly politically damaged still. Like it or not, the headwinds are against us. We can’t afford our fantasies to get the better of our good sense. We’re going to have to go with a candidate with less than perfect positions on a few of the social issues to keep one who is perfectly liberal on everything out of the White House. Sorry, but I’m not going to allow the same stupid arguments that got us Bill Clinton in 1992 when conservatives were flocking to Perot to now bring us Hillary Clinton in the White House in 2008. I’ll go with the guy who’s conservative on most of the important issues to keep one who’s liberal on everything out of the White House thanks.
Read here for the truth about Rudy’s CONSERVATIVE record rather than the nonsense droolings of the unthinking few here on Free Republic: http://www.city-journal.org/html/17_1_rudy_giuliani.html
They sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to demons.
They shed innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was desecrated by their blood.
They defiled themselves by what they did;
by their deeds they prostituted themselves.
~ Psalm 106:37-39
He just keeps digging that hole deeper!
There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
~ Proverbs 6:16-19
And what was Thompson's Senate record on abortion? How much legislation ever comes up on abortion? Not much since it's an issue for the courts. It probably likely consisted of him voting against PBAs. Rudy would likely vote against that too. It's not as if he had any votes that tested his position on abortion being legal in the first trimest.
If God truly has a plan for each of us, then isn’t what Rudy is doing, part of God’s plan? Can God’s plan be wrong, or can it even be modified?
Tell that to:
Pre-borns who died when most die due to abortion--the first trimester;
To pre-borns of minors who've died or will continue to die whose grandparents have said "OK";
To pre-borns who've died w/out "Uncle Sam" footing the bill (the vast majority)
And to pre-borns of parents stubborn enough to wait beyond the "waiting periods."
And you call that "light years?"
No. It's positions like yours, Thompson's, and Guilani that is "dark years" behind this age of enlightenment where fetal development, sonogram imaging, and fetal surgery exists.
Ethical docs treat the pre-born baby as a second patient. Politicians should likewise treat them as a minor constituent and future voter.
